has it ever occurred to you hours after a conversation that you could have said something you don't distinctly remember saying?

i just think maybe i did because i usually refer to this person by a disparaging nickname when talking to people who don't know them and i was in a state of surprise which might have meant i failed to realise immediately that i'd had a huge slip of the tongue.

the friend i was talking to who is also friends with this person didn't seem to react, at least not verbally, but he might have been eating and i wasn't looking at him, and he didn't have much time to before my phone rang and may have already forgotten (temporarily) about it by the time i got off the phone.

it occurred to me three hours later as i checked my phone that i might have done this, and the consequences could be dire if i have. i have no real memory of doing so but maybe i know i did so i'm repressing the memory.

I know the feeling. Try to be aware of what you are saying, but not to the point where it you can't focus on the conversation.

But most importantly, don't think about it too much afterwards. It's a waste of energy.
