I moved out of my mother's house soon after turning 18 last year. I'm not completely on my own though, I've got a roommate. We live in a small house. We don't have any problems now. We don't have any money issues. Our bills are never high and we always have extra spending money.

My BIGGEST piece of advice for starting out on your own, and I cannot stress it enough, is to be very careful with money. In the house we lived in before, we were a bit careless with some bill money and our electricity got shut off. We also had some toxic neighbors around that place. The cops were always patrolling the area - not to mention they stole from us... so yeah. Learn the neighborhood if possible.

I would have avoided a lot of obstacles when I first started out if I had taken the advice my mother was trying to give me. I was so set on doing everything completely on my own that I ignored a lot of it, and I learned the hard way that I should have listened.
