Dont you think so? I mean I dont mind if we still have to pay money to go to the hospital for a broken leg. But I think it's ridiculous that we have to pay just as much for services to keep us from committing suicide or to go on a killing spree...especially since most people who are psychiatrists are a bunch on unsympathetic idiots who know nothing about mental health anyway.

I want to go to counseling again for my depression as well as other anxiety issues I suffer from. I dont have any money and my parent would NEVER support the idea as they didnt approve of my first counseling treatments to begin with. Everytime my mom picked me up from an appointment she demanded that I tell her everything I talked about at my session (so much for patient-doctor confidentiality. Just because she's my parent doesnt mean she has the right to overwrite it!)

Nothing is "free" in society...even if one is on Medicaid or any other government program, these programs are paid for by
every taxpayer in the country.

yes,agrees.
basic health care [whether its to do with physical, mental, behavioral etc] should be free, like it is in some countries who have got an NHS [though will find if have got a free system will have to wait months and months for an appointment if its a mainstream doc].

Have only ever had one bad experience with a pyschologist, who was a mental health pysch-stuck several wrong labels on am after asking just a couple of questions and no checks, social services learning disability pyschiatrists have been nothing but supportive and caring but they're not mainstream/open to everyone.
There are probably many decent pyschiatrists out there,it's that have not found the right one yet.

I think that we need to have either a government paid system or a free market system. Here in the Police States of Amerika, we have neither :-(

I agree - health care should be considered a right, not a priveledge. Here in the US there are too many things that should be rights that are considered priveledges.

Raisedbyignorance, you say you live in Indianapolis. Move to a state like Texas where there is a Mental Health/Mental Retardation Authority and give them proof of income and they'll give you free visits to a shrink, free meds, sometimes access to support groups, information about other support groups, and other services. Your caseworker there can find you a place to live wherever you end up.

I wish we were like Canada, and the UK. They all get free healthcare. I wish our country had the same. Maybe someday that will happen. Lot of people can't even afford it. My bf had to cancel one of his dentist appointments because he didn't have the money. His insurance covers it but not all so he has to pay $800 of it but not all at once. They sure wiped out his savings, same as his parents because they had to borrow from him. He has money again now but he is going to wait till after our wedding.

I haven't been to the dentist in more than 8 years - no insurance and no clinics around here.

But in Canada we are looooooooong waiting list. Me for exemple i wait 1 year for a rendezvous with my autism specialist. In Canada it's free but you wait your turn. Believe me

yea unfortunately the UK's health service, while free, is still far from "perfect".. i agree healthcare should be free though.
if i became a doctor i'd feel compelled to use what i had learned to help people, it's quite upsetting how many "doctors" genuinely don't care :(

It will probably become free for you too once your government realise that proactive measures are better and cheaper than to pick up the pieces on a regular basis.

"Teach a man to fish" and all that...
