well, about freedom, they are free to do so, to ruin their own health if they please, but as long as they don't ruin anyone else's health, which they would be responsable for it, and how many smokers are actually that considerate, not to mention some who I know that refuse to believe it is actually bad, therefore smoking infront of non-smokers because of it.

Yeah, I mean, most smokers I know are inconsiderate like that. I still don't agree with abolishing it. I'm one of those people who thinks the seat belt law is BS. Obviously kids and babies need to be strapped in. But if someone's stupid enough to not wear one, then it's their problem.

If somehow, some way, all smokers were inconsiderate then I might agree. Might. But I just can't stand the thought of a person who's only issue is being self destructive, not having the freedom to smoke anymore because everyone else ruined it for them.

Well, why don't you all pool your money, and buy ads on TV to explain to people why they shouldn't smoke around their kids?

Sure beats turning them all into criminals.

First, ban all tobacco advertising.
Continue media campaign, but not to the extent that it makes smoking seem like a forbidden fruit to rebellious teens.
Wean the smokers off nicotine, slash the price of nicotine patches. Develop a drug which inhibits nicotine receptors and puts people off smoking.
And so on and so forth, until the amount of smokers is so small that it can be banned without much of a whimper.

If the amount of smokers is that small, why would banning it still be necessary?

I mean, I know we love the banning on principle and all, but I'm curious why if there's half a dozen to a dozen measures which can effectively reduce the smoking population to "marginal" we're still focusing on or even worried about banning it.

I smoke because I like it. I smoke outside, in my car, and in my friends house, who also smokes. I make sure I air the car afterwards, because I do not like the after smell. Just because you do not like something, does not mean it should be banished from the face of the earth. If it has grown naturally on this planet, it is here for a reason. Take my cigarettes away from me and I shall irritate you to death with constant poking in the eye. It takes away some of my troubles, and I feel good afterwards. I live in the open country, and it affects zero people. I do not like brussel sprouts, but I am not going to launch a campaign to have them systematically wiped out. I just keep away from them.

I agree that smoking is a bad habit, but it is my habit. I know the difference of polite and impolite. If the company I am in is not smoking, neither will I. If there are smokers, I will join them. Smoking in front of children is a stupid thing to do, because they cannot stop or prevent what is happening. If you make a child go to their room because you want to smoke, they will think that they have done wrong themselves, or that you do not want them around.

I have stopped drinking alcohol, something I used to thrive on, but now I hate it. i have no problem with those that do, as long as they do it responsibly and do not start involving vehicles. I never thought that I would quit drinking and start smoking, but whatever makes me happy, I shall try to do. Anubis and ed, opposites that you are, I agree with neither of your initial statements.

I like Amy Winehouse, she has a gift. Sadly she is wasting her life with drug abuse. I cannot trot off to London and say to her that I think what she is doing is wrong, she must stop. It is for her to reach in and find out. being on other sides of the country, what she does is not affecting my health. It will eventually affect my enjoyment of her work, which will be cut short, but that is life.

My parents smoke when I'm in the car with them.

I hate people smoking around me. I'm not a child, but I think smoking around non-smokers should be considered as a crime.

You're right... we only have 2.2 million people in prison now... using your idea, we should be able to increase that number at least tenfold!
