I just realized that I to a large extent recognize people from their avatars and often tend to think a user who I've noticed having been active in the past has been disappeared, while in reality (s)he only changed his/her avatar. Even if I realize the truth, it feels as if part of their identity has changed.

What about you?

Other includes, for example, signature.

Not so much. Usernames cannot be changed, whereas an avatar can.

I tend to recognize people from their avatars and I don't like it too much when I see that somebody decided to change it (especially if that person used to have one avatar for a long time). I also don't like it when one doesn't have any avatar.

Always the name... two people can have the same avatar, and people change theirs.

Some people I'll largely recognize by their avatar, others their name, most by both.

I think usernames can be changed. If you go onto your profile and click on upload through forum profile in the avatar section, you should be able to change your username. I'm sticking with TheAPERSON though.

Neither. I don't usually pay attention to either.

Name, usually. I find avatars unreliable, although there are notable exeptions.

When I see an unfamiliar avatar, I then check the name
