I know fellow forumites by their names rather than by avatars. Sometimes I get avatars confused if one has similar background colour to another.

Having moderated large forums now and in the past, I'm finding I tend to use user numbers rather than any personally identifiable (and modifiable) data. That, and on Whirlpool, I use the moderator notes...

I'm pretty visual, so I see an avitar I relate better to it. However, I sometimes recognize names too.

It's easier to recognize someone's avatar but I always check the name since avatars aren't constant.
