while walking through the woods hunting for mushrooms, I found this:



I've never seen a red/orange mushroom before.

that thing looks poisonous

Looks like an egg to me.

Egg stage fly agaric maybe

Looks a little like the big red ones we have here up north,
Amanita muscaria, that the vikings ate when partying and ripping through
towns. Those look like that in the beginning and then
they get some white spots. Very poisonous, have them in
my garden + a couple of other special ones

the ones in this link are flat, but they come coneshaped also

not everybody knows that the shroom is the fruit, the plant is
that white stuff, it grows under ground and can cover huge areas,
when it breaks through the soil here and there and the sun hits it,
the it start to grow fruit at those spots. No uv-light, no shrooms.

The Vikings ate posinous mushrooms and didn't die? Were these mushrooms used/consumed for their hallucinogenic properties?

alas, no. It's American Caesar's Mushroom (A. jacksonii).

Yes, the poison made them "trip", running around like cavemen. One of their
favourite things to do actually and what are the vikings known for..?
their crazy no-mercy raiding and stealing and stuff

But i have to underline, no one should ever eat these shrooms, ever!! !
they mess up the kidneys real bad, real fast and its not good for the head
either

The vikingthing, i`ve mentioned it before, and about Lindisfarne...
I`m just so sure they simply crashed into Lindisfarne on a drunken
shroom-filled joyride and took it from there, i can just see it before
me, a boat full of wasted vikings, suddenly the boat stops and someone
yells "hey guys, i think we hit something..." they really ripped through
that place didn`t they

I think that the european varieties of A.Muscaria may have had fewer hydrazine compounds in them than the North American variety. Still though, I agree that they, or any other mushroom, especially the Amanita strains should NOT be eaten unless you are completely sure that it's non poisonous. -- Amanita's are probably the most poisonous mushrooms on the planet.

That is a freaky mushroom. I would shudder if I stumbled upon that. I have daymares about fungi taking over the world.

I read somewhere that the Lapps used to feed fly agaric mushrooms to reindeer. The reindeer would then filter out the poison and the Lapps would then drink the reindeer's urine to get high.

Are you sure? I think the white bits on fly agaric are remnants of the veil (the case the shroom emerges from) so if it was a fly agaric the cap would have white bits from the start.

You can buy them bagged up & ready for consumption from many shops - theres a preparation method involved (just uses heat i thin) that reduces the poisonous qualities and increases the hallucinogenic side.

Not sure if you can buy Amanita muscaria in any shops,
sounds crazy cant buy it here i live anyway, but then
again they grow everywhere so if you want them just
pick them. But there are alot of other shrooms you can use as
food before you dig into the Amanita i think.

They are red at first but in a few days they get the white
spots. But have seen that this can vary a little

Heey, look what i found

looked out of my kitchen window and suddenly something
red caught my eye at the egde of the lawn, alot of shrooms
now, its been raining for 2 days on and off

This one has popped up in the last 48 hours and i see now
that the white spots on this is left-over mycelium, as someone
pointed out. But when this one gets older it gets this vorte-like white/
brown-ish spots, maybe its the mycelium that hangs on, never thought
about it before. Imagine, this beautiful little thing could probably kill me and
a couple more (they come in green also for those who dont like red)

Have noticed one type of bird that feeds on these, have no idea if they make it
or not but they really enjoy eating them it looks like, cant get enough. Never
seen anything else eat it, just those birds

Fogman's statement is consistent with what I have read as well. American A. muscaria's toxins are present in different amounts from the mushroom found in Europe. The American A. muscaria will make you very sick and could kill you; it will probably not produce any psychedelic effects.

I also know people who have tried eating A. muscaria in America (Maine, in fact) in order to trip. None of them tripped or experienced any pleasant effects. Instead, they all reported flu-like symptoms.

While we're on this subject, I've heard similar stories about morning glories (a North American vine that is rumored to have psychoactive properties).
