I would laugh sooo hard if it did happen, but naturally I don't think it will.

But if it does, boy will i die laughing.

What exactly is the experiment doing anyway, all I have heard is something about cosmic rays and recreating the big bang. I would like this in as few short words as I am not bothered with reading an entire scintific journal.

I still don't believe anything is going to happen.

Have a look:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Particle_accelerator

Quote:
A particle accelerator (or atom smasher[1]) is a device that uses electric fields to propel electrically-charged particles to high speeds and to contain them. An ordinary CRT television set is a simple form of accelerator. There are two basic types: linear accelerators and circular accelerators.

I had read in my physics textbook that CRT ("cathode-ray-tube") television sets
propel electrons up to 30% the speed of light before they hit the screen.
Particle accelerators usually aim to see how many nines they can get of 0.99c.

Aw, c'mon Tim.

As the world collapses into the newly created black hole which has fallen down to the center of the earth, you'll be getting geographically closer to more and more female aspies who watch South Park.

So tomorrow the world is coming to an end. Then I have been jobhunting for nothing the last couple of weeks :? Oh well, I had a fulfilled life. I always stated the scary thing about death is when you see it approaching long beforehand, realising it is coming near. Therefor I would rather die in a second because of an accident or explosion or so, so that I dont see my own death approaching and can stay worryless until the last moment. Dying of a long disease slowly breaking you down seems much less attractive. So if we die tomorrow, I get the death I always dreamt off ... If the world does not end tomorrow, then I just continue my life as usual. So whatever happens, I cannot lose 8)

Seriously, this is just going to blow over and people will afterwards wonder what the fuzz was all about. The one thing bothering me is the total waste of money on an experiment where I can hardly see the point of it. With that amount of cash, you could feed thousands and thousands of people living far below the poverty line. So I dont fear the world will come to an end, I do say this experiment is ridiculous waste of money.

0830 BST = 14:30 CDT

Time is now 12:00 CDT 9/9/2008,
so there are 26 hours and 30 minutes left.

Is anyone actually worried?

It's ok,the panic's over. The Large Hadron Collider is only being started up on the 10th.
It will take months of tests before they are ready to collide particles together. It may even
take years until it's working at full capacity.Maybe around 2012,you know the year that
the Mayans said the world will end. Oh,wait a minute.....
Not true of course they are using full power first try, no testing required say the scientists who built it! 8O

What if they accidently create a real big-bang, but this time Earth being the center of the new universe? :P

Most humans think they're the center of the universe already. (Actually, it's here: http://arfarfarf.com/fremont/the_sign_post.php)

I was freaked out by a friend telling me they were switching on a similar kind of apparatus somewhere else back on New Year's Eve, 1999. There were the same kind of rumors going round about that, and nothing happened then....OK, there was an incident with some Morris dancers and a ludicrous amount of purple hair dye, and it did involve scientists, but they were biologists, and no mushrooms were involved...that time. Long story.

For the record, mine's an Alaskan Amber. Followed by a Night Watch. Followed by a Mongoose IPA. Followed by a Pike Kilt Lifter, and rounded off with a Manny's. You have to do these things properly, right?

BTW, collisions won't actually start until October / November, after they've fine-tuned the machine. Tomorrow they're just sending particles around the loop.

I was mistaken, here is the correct time until the machine is activated about 12 hours and 40 minutes from now.

No collisions until my 23rd birthday or thereabouts? Meh.
