But it almost certainly means you have dreadful taste in music.

Patriotism is but a national scourge; wish for more than the liking of one tune over another, or else ye shall not be saved.

Pray to God and Satan, and ask for love and hate from both, or else you'll constantly feel misguide hate for your fellow animals.

I think Jesus said something like this, when he said one must listen to me.

You don't have to listen to me.

I like the Union Jack better than the maple leaf, and I don't think it makes me less patriotic. I cheer for Canada when the Olympics are on and my favourite anthem is Oh, Canada.

The national anthem is not a great song, the music is taken and the lyrics are awkward. knowing this does not make you a bad American.
Don't forget, several times throughout history, the topic of changing the anthem to a more melodic song has been discussed.

Wow, I love "O Canada" too! With that said, the purest moment of my life came during a recent Winter Olympics medal ceremony where, because of a controversial judges decision that was corrected, *both* the Russian and Canadian pairs got the gold, so I was treated to hearing BOTH of those anthems! Heaven...

I remember as a teenager some canadian was being all high and mighty about how most canadians know their national anthem and msot americans don't.

I pointed out how anyone could learn the canadian national anthem in under 2 minutes and asked him to do the same with the american one.

look how easy it is. You could introduce it in the morning and test first graders on whether or not they know it in the afternoon

Quote:
O Canada!
Our home and native land!
True patriot love in all thy sons command.

With glowing hearts we see thee rise,
The True North strong and free!

From far and wide,
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.

God keep our land glorious and free!
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.

O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.

From watching the Olympics, I can honestly say I much prefer both the US and Russian to the dirge that accompanied Team GB's otherwise heartening performance.

Can't comment on the Canadian anthem I'm afraid as they didn't play it

Not at all. I, personally, am a huge fan of the German national anthem.

No; it means you have an honest amateur interest in musicology.
(Since when does being an honest amateur in musicology make you unpatriotic?)

I have an amateur interest in musicology myself:

1) I'll admit I find "The Sound of Silence" by Simon and Garfunkel, for example,
wins in a thousand and one ways over Elgar's "Pomp and Circumstance".
(your choice of kicks its *ss, annihilates it, beats the cr*p out of it, and so on!)

2) For another thing, I find "God Bless America", let alone "O Canada",
to be much easier to sing than "The Star-Spangled Banner."

3) In support of ShadyNails, the music for the German national
anthem was indeed composed by a very respectable composer
from the Classical period named Franz Joseph Haydn.

There's more, but I hope these give you the general idea.

Hey there...I'm here tonight with something that's troubling me.

My question is...does loving another country's national anthem more then your own make you unpatriotic?

You see, more then 20 years ago, when I was watching 'Rocky IV', I heard the Soviet Union national anthem for the first time, and I thought to myself "Damn...that's beautiful, even if I don't know what they're singing."

And only 2 nights ago, I found a sound file of that very anthem in ENGLISH! And sung by the great Paul Robeson, no less! When I finished listening to it...my eyes were damp, and I felt...so at peace. I felt more love and pride in hearing that Soviet anthem then I EVER FELT listening to my own country's.

Does that make me a bad American? Comments please.

Oh, and if anyone wants to hear that anthem, I'll post a link in future if it's allowed.

the great soviet union will live on forever :)
