Choose a fish that isn't threatened or endangered.
The more expensive a fish is, the more threatened it is. So go with a cheap one.

Bingo!
I was a vegetarian for about 30 years with a lot of that time spent as a vegan. If you're doing the diet for health reasons eating milk or eggs is contra-productive in many instances. What ever is in the animal is in their products.

Soy is much over rated as being healthy. Its thought by many that the only safe soy to consume is fermented soy due to naturally occurring protease inhibitors in unfermented soy products. Tofu is not fermented.
Beans in general aren't a total protein in themselves anyway.

There's a surprising amount of both protein and calcium in green leafy vegetables. The short coming there how ever is that its winter in the northern hemisphere and, unless you live somewhere warm, fresh green leafy vegetables are going to all be imports this time of year.

If I wasn't already doing it myself (as a raw foody), if a child or grandchild of mine wanted to become a vegetarian and it was winter I would get them an assortment of sprouting seeds and beans.

As long as they remembered to rinse the seeds and beans so they could sprout, I would provide healthy vegetarian meals made using those sprouts.

As far as meat substitutes go, I'd like to recommend Boca. Their soy chicken is actually pretty good, I think.
Nobody makes good soy hamburger though, as far as I've seen.

Gelatin does involve animal parts, in case you were thinking that they may not have, since the only comment I've seen so far about gelatin was more vegan-oriented.

You may also probably want to avoid non-food products that involve animal parts, like leather, furs, glue (I think), etc.
Depends on your conscience.

I eat it. It just depends on personal preferences.

which type of fish is the best, and has more proteins?

I'm royally confused, you say you want to be a vegetarian because you feel shame in eating animals, but now you're saying you want to eat fish? Are you just doing this as a means to be different from others? It makes no sense to me.

I heard that soy can be dangerouse as it can dose the body with a hormone simular to estrogen, striping the normal stuff and replacing it with weaker hormones, and an inrease to what males are supposed to have. Aparently it has caused some problems with a range of things.

take vitamins and get regular checkups and keep an eye on your health. cutting out entire food groups can wreck havoc on your health. As a vegetarian you need to be particular to get your protein elsewhere. balance soy with milk, eggs and maybe cheese.

that's not so good, you have no protein there!

anyway, I've been a vegetarian for 10 years but I do admit that I'm a bit of a hypocrite- I eat fish (I've been back on fish for 3-4 years) because I really need a lot of omega-3s to keep a clear head, I tried drinking flaxseed oil but it just wasn't that effective. I mostly eat organic, freerange salmon and I always make sure that my tuna is dolphin-friendly.

mostly my diet is based on beans, soy, vegetables etc. I looove making veggie burgers from all kinds of beans. I eat a lot of stir-fried vegetables as well.

there's a cook book that I really recommend, it's called "Famous vegetarians and their favourite recipes" (roughly translated but I bet it came out in English as well), some really good stuff there.

and the best place to eat- vegan thai buffet! :D they should open those places everywhere.

Going veggie is good, just be sure to get lots of soy and dairy products for protien, and you should be good.

Vegans are the ones that really get to me, a friend of mine got married this fall and one of the guests was a vegan, prepareing her meal was hell. I can understand not wanting to eat a animal, but I don't see anthing wrong eating something that a animal produces naturally, like eggs, its just as well to eat them rather then waste them.

What really pisses me off are people who try to make their pets veggie or vegan like cats and dogs.

Wow I am amazed at the amount of people that are either vegitarian, or don't eat/like meat, it is one of my favirout food substances, I just think that it seems like the natural order, lions kill cute baby gazel all the time. It can be hard to eat cute things, but every predator does it, and Predators are an important part of the eco system, part of the circle of life, we offer them a safe enviroment, and they pay us back in eating them, though I dont like how some are treated. I had a good friend who's family were all vegitarian, I at times gave a friendly hard time over the fact that his fake sausages probably were worse then the real deal, but I admired the nobility of the cause.

Yeah - HERE'S a video for anybody interested! Theres an English version on the side menu if it doesn't come up straight away.

Kasuki-Chan,

If you eat fish you would be a pescetarian not a vegetarian. Fish is still flesh.

Going vegetarian is easy, vegan is ten times harder. Just don't think you can live of cheese and tomato pizzas, you really neet a balanced diet with lots of fresh fruit and veg and leafy greens. Easy peezy! :D

I guess that personally I don't like the idea of having rigid rules in diet as well as belonging to a "group". I often hear s**t coming from "real" vegetarians who criticise the fact that I eat fish and how that makes me something worse than a vegetarian. frankly, I wouldn't want to be associated with those people anyway, so I don't care.

I don't like the idea of taking anyone's life. all the creatures just want to live and be happy and I don't want to take that from them. still though, I can't really relate to fishes as much as to mammals and birds, or even reptiles. I'm not saying that I don't feel bad about eating them, I do, but somehow they don't seem to me like real individuals the same way as other animals do.

edit- also, I think that fish is something that I could catch and kill with my own hands if I had to, so that kind of justyfies eating them for me. I couldn't ever kill any other animal.

I'm not a vegetarian (I don't ever plan to be a vegetarian seeing as I can't stand 99% of all vegetables) but I feel kind of sad because she's just trying something here and it looks like she's being forced to not eat fish, when in the beginning, she was being "forced" to eat meat, isn't that what she's trying to avoid? If she wants to eat fish, then eat fish, it's her choice, not mine or yours. Also, author of the thread: if you do decide to eat fish, please don't consume large amounts of it in a month, a lot of fish contain mercury and .. i might be able to find the chart of good readily available fish and how much of it you can eat a month.

http://green.msn.com/Green-Living/Food- ... est-Fish/2

this tells you what you can eat and how much of it, and how the fish are normally caught.

About the protein thing: all foods contain varying amounts of protein, so if you just eat a variety of foods you'll be fine. You don't have to watch what you eat that closely.

Also, most Americans eat way too much protein, and any excess amount of protein you eat gets turned into fat.
