It seems like Japan and anime are very popular in the west.
I agree. It seems like a lot of people out here love Japan and anime, but I barely see people displaying their fascination publicly. No one talking about it, referencing it, quoting it, wearing it on shirts... Which is weird, because I've been noticing very sublte increases in how much anime is poping up. There's a whole buch of games now that use the art style, there's now a huge shelf dedicated to it in Best Buy as well as in other stores, and the number of anime style shows/cartoons on tv is only increasing, and even coming out of the "late night only" slots. But I've never had or witnessed a conversation about anime or even Japanese culture in particular. It's as though everyone loves it, everyone knows it, but people are still too afraid to come out and talk about it because they think they'll be view as "that guy with the weird obssession." So instead, they're waiting around for other people to break the barrier so they can feel more comfortable talking about it themselves.
Anyways, I don't know how apparent anime/Japanese culture in general is in public in other parts of the US, but that is how it seems to be here.
Oh, and to answer your question, yes I have a pretty big fascination with Japan/anime that only started up recently
I'd love to visit Japan sometime, though I would NEVER be able to do it alone, and I think I would want to at least a basic grasp of the language and culture so I don't make an ass of myself, and know what to expect. I especially want to learn the laws... I hear it's illegal to drive a dirty car in Japan, and it's also illegal to chew gum in public.
