Quote:
Sarongs are worn by both men and women in many parts of the world, but especially in south and southeast Asia. This long, brightly colored fabric can be worn on a hot summer day, while lounging around the house, sitting by the pool, and even while entertaining guests for a casual, backyard dinner. Sarongs are extremely comfortable, striking, and versatile, and you don't need to be in an exotic locale to wear one.

The sarong takes the place of trousers, so make sure you wear underwear underneath. However, Indonesian and Malay men in rural Southeast Asia countries normally wear sarongs without underwear, especially at home, due to the tropical heat.

edit Steps
1.
1
Wear underpants underneath. It may not be traditional, but this becomes important if you end up sitting like a man (with your legs open) and showing everyone your "Scottish pride".
2.
2
Tuck the back under as you are about to sit down. Generally you don't want to put your bare skin on a chair used by the general public.
3.
3
Though crossing your legs at the knee helps women remember to keep them closed, men might find this uncomfortable. If possible, extend your leg straight in front of you, resting your heels on the ground and crossing them at the ankle. This will cause the knees to remain relatively closed.
4.
4
Don't forget to make sure that the front of the kilt is covering all of the pertinent parts.
5.
5
Make sure the kilt is long enough to accomplish good coverage. There is nothing worse than finding out no matter what you do you are going to be flashing people.
6.
6
Try pressing your knees together. This will help you remember to keep your legs closed.
edit Tips
* Remember that if you need to pick something up from the floor do not bend over at your waist as the back may ride up to your bum and show people a little more than they wanted to see. You will need to bend your knees and keep your legs relatively closed. Some might think it is not manly, but the only other thing you can do is ask someone else to pick the thing up for you. Also, the most correct way (for your back) of picking something up is this way, so you should not bend your back even if not wearing a kilt.
* Wear a kilt pin - it provides some extra weight to pull the edge of the kilt down. Note that the kilt pin does NOT go through both layers of the kilt, but only the top layer.
edit Warnings
* With your legs extended in front of you, you present something of a tripping hazard, so you will need to be somewhat aware of people walking close to you.
