I was fascinated by Anastasia especially. It was after the movie came out, of course.

Not long after I also became obsessed with Anne Frank, and for some reason I was always drawing similarities between the two girls.

Well, I'm obsessed with Russian culture in general. I'm also obsessed ridiculously with ancient Crete, the myth of Atlantis, and ancient military history. Not entirely sure if those are considered unusual.

My odd interest is Steam Punk and Diesel Punk. (Think League of Extrodenary Gentlemen for Steam Punk or the anime Steamboy and think Talespin or Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow for Diesel Punk.)

You might be interested in the movie "Rasputin", starring Alan Rickman in the title role and Ian McKellan as Nicolas II. (I suppose Alan Rickman is my special interest, all though I'm not AS enough to talk about him non-stop). I think another title for the movie was "The Last of the Romanovs" or something like that, which actually is a more fitting title. The story is narrated by young Alexei.

jpfudgeworth, I like phonetics, too. It's not an obsession, but I can see how it could be. I once took a linguistics class where we had to tape a 20 minute conversation, and then analyze it in many ways. My favorite part of the exercise was writing it all out phonetically. When you do that, you can read a person's accent.

I think my most unusual one was US shipboard weaponry and manufacture (since I've found it's not clear, this means naval artillery such as that of the battleships) from the time they became fixed mounted and onwards.

I know this isn't Alan Rickman related, but you did mention Ian McKellen. I laugh every time.

Lately Ive been obsessed with phonetics. Specifically, Im working on a phonetic writing system. I started thinking about how annoying the English language is with all its silent letters and complicated vowel combinations and I ended up with a whole new way to spell things that makes a lot more sense to me. Its not that unusual but its also not that useful.

[ laatlee iiv bin ubsest wix funetiks. spisifiklee, iim w'rking qn u funetik riiting sistum. ii stqrtid xingking ubaot hao unoying xu English langgwij iz wix ql its siilint let'rz and kqmplikaatid vaol kqmbinaashunz and ii endid up wix u hol nuu waa tu spel xingz xat maaks u lqt mor sens tu mee. its nqt xat unyuuzyuu'l but its qlso nqt xat yuusf'l. ]
One of my friends is trying to learn English (he mostly only speaks Spanish), and when he wants to remember how to say a certain word, he writes it phonetically. Only he writes it phonetically in his language. In one example, one place where in English you'd write a 'B,' in his there might be a 'V.' It's really quite fascinating. :D

You know how women have different kinds of bathing suit backs?

Oh my goodness!
I was interested in this, too! When I was four or so, though.
I wasn't obsessed, I just found the different kinds interesting. I especially liked the backs on the swimsuits that the girls on my brother's swim team wore. I guess that would fall under 'preoccupation with parts of objects'. :P
However, I have not had any really strong interests that are deemed unusual by the general population. My main special interest is music of any sort (listening to it, playing it, and analyzing it), but for a stretch of five or six years, it was Presidents of the U.S. I must say that they have been my strongest special interest. I guess it's pretty unusual for a five-year-old girl to be able to list the presidents in chronological order, but hey. :D I have had many short-lived interests, but I'd have to say music and American Presidents have been my strongest.

That is so awesome! And yes, I would definitely agree that it would fall under "pre-occupation with parts of objects". Another interest of mine that would fall under this category would be ear lobes and earrings at age 10-11. Like you and the bathing suits, I wasn't obsessed, but I found the different varieties interesting.

Your former American President interest seems pretty cool too: you must have impressed a lot of adults with that one :D

My diagnoses - social anxiety disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder.

When I was of a similar age I had an obsession with the reproductive system and all things rude, when we learned about puberty in year 5 (age 9/10) I knew it all anyway :P. This obsession caused me to say innaprporiate things quite a few times.
The strangest obsessions I've had are when I fixate over people, I have been obsessed with 2 people while I was in highschool. One was a friend and another was just someone in a few of my classes.

All my obsessions are strange, if not the subject the intensity definitely is.

Completely agreed. Mine have always been with very random things as well. Nothing to be ashamed about, though: to each his or her own! I think it's strange though how mainstream everyone's interests seem to be though.

I had one about puberty too! This girl in grade 3 whose parents were unashamed about their pornography obsession gave me the lowdown...it was all downhill from there. :P Mine was not so much about puberty, but my childhood guesses at what I deemed "adult content". I was obsessed with South Park becasue my parents wouldnt let me watch it, and so I made my own version: I took a disney colouring book, drew reproductive organs on all the characters and made them sware as much as humanly possible. The sad part is that I still have it somewhere!

I also have had people obsessions as well, and still do. What were your experiences with those? How were you able to conceal your obsessions? Did the people involved ever find out?

-From when I was really young:

The crucifixion of Jesus. I would draw pictures of him just hanging there. Often he would have this big smile on his face.

More recently:

-Whether or not the characters in Angela Brazil's stories wear corsets. I've deduced that a few do, but they're usually the "naughty girls" as she calls them. Characters such as Hazel Prestbury and Netta Goodwin.

I've always had a strong interest in disasters, particularly tornadoes, hurricanes, and tsunami waves.

As a result I can tell you most anything about any of them.
