Did anybody happen to catch this last night on TV?

http://www.cbc.ca/documentaries/natureo ... ofthedeep/

An octopus smarter than ... well, at least smarter than me.
And it can morph, instantly, when it sees a predator!

When we wonder about life in outer space, and what form would it take - try this for starters!

I think dolphins are smarter than most humans.

But did you watch the show? Did you see how totally smart that octopus is? Did you see them prove that the octopus understands *math* ?

This isn't bogus stuff or a daydream or a wish or a book. It's real science.

And did you see the octopus morph in an instant when a predator appeared?

Why aren't you excited? :bounce:

I didn't see it as I don't watch Canadian television. I just watched the jar opening and it was cool.

I saw something before where apes were learning a sequence video of dots where it had to remember the order in which they flashed and then press them in the same order afterwards. They were amazingly fast at it, it was phenominal. They made humans do it as well and they were far slower and had a far smaller memory span.

There are more species of animal living in the water than on terra firma. They live in relative harmony compared to human habitat. Some species are far more evolved than humans, eg, sharks. Many animals underwater not only think to survive but they have well honed instincts for self preservation and hunting including, but not limited to, telepathy, sonar, electrical receptors and genetic momory.

It is an amazing world down here.

At least sea creatures are smart enough, not to hurt members of their own species.

Shouldn't have tried to have some fun, it backfires too much.

There are some animals smarter than some people.

Not necessarily, almost all animals fight eachother.

Everyone knows that dolphins are the second most intelligent species on Earth. However, their behavior is misinterpreted as playful attempts to whistle for fish and jump through hoops.

Yes there are some of the more smater animals that would actually be as smart as a mildly ret*d person, or a normal 4 year old (like apes). So technically you are right :D

Haven't you seen the first episode of Southpark?

Cows are the smartest lifeform on the planet.

I love the fact that the octopus climbs completely into the jar. The long clip failed to play on my computer - I'll have to watch the repeat presentation tomorrow. Thanks for the info. Looks like an interesting show. There's suppossed to be something tomorrow at 8 eastern about the brain too... looks like it's CBC night at M's house!
