Sometimes, people get so into what they're doing that they don't feel pain until they realize that they have a wound.
That's true. This past summer at Yellowstone there was a trail that we were on that lead to a waterfall observation point. There was an unofficial trail that lead from the observation point down to the riverbank, but it was deteriorated and very steep. I tried to show off in front of my cousin by sliding down the steep part on my feet, fell over and ripped a hole in my jeans around the knee. I didn't realize that I had also cut my knee until about ten minutes later. It was stinging - just enough for me to notice - so I rolled up my pants leg to find that I was dripping blood. Of course, by that time the wound was half-closed. I did take some bottled water and a paper towel from the bathrooms to clean it before it scabbed up completely.
Of course, I'm no stranger to minor cuts and scrapes, since I lead a very active lifestyle, including running, cycling, parkour, and the like. Given my tendency to be really active, it's a miracle I haven't done anything worse than that to myself. Never broken a bone or anything. The only time I was in the hospital was when I was a newborn baby, they kept me for a few extra days in ICU because of lung complications.
Other than that I'm pretty lucky, not just injuries but illnesses too. Suiseiten had a cold this past week, it had been going around campus, and I think I might have caught it too, only I wasn't as incapacitated. I only get sick about once or twice a year, and it's usually something minor that lasts for the span of 24 hours or so. Here's hoping that my current lucky streak regarding my health contintues.
