Because the commercials are too damn loud and I shouldn't have to get up every 5 minutes to turn the commercials down.

Plus, the majority of stuff on TV is trash so you spend most your time surfing and not watching.

This is true as well.

Because we want to cater to the elderly and those who are disabled as much as possible. Same goes with bus stops. When I stand at a bus stop I can actually see the next bus stop even though the road is curved. If I miss the bus and there are people who need to get off or get on at the next bus stop I can run to it and make it no problem.

They're convenient. And you can use them to toggle between your cable box, PS/XBox, etc. On ours you can pull up the channel menu and navigate on demand stuff and scheduled stuff, etc. You can turn on CC, too.

When I was a kid there weren't remotes so adults just told the kids to change the channel or turn it up or down.

They're also good at seeming like the telephone when you're really out of it. That's good for a laugh.

1. Convenience

2. More buttons means quicker access to what you want

3. Satellite receivers often don't have any more buttons than volume and channel

4. Manually changing the channel takes an extremely long time, while using a keypad it takes less than 3 seconds.

5. Buttons on remotes are more ergonomic and have better lighting so you can see what you are doing easier.

Well since most TV's are used with a satellite box and the satellite box is usually stationed underneath the TV, why would anyone want to be that close to a screen whilst switching channels? For those sensitive to electrical fields this would be uncomfortable, for those with certain types of epilepsy being so close to the TV would perhaps trigger a seizure. Even if you didn't have a health condition that would be aggravated by being so close to a TV, it'd still be uncomfortable following TV guide's and so forth on the monstrously big TV's that inhabit main living rooms in this day and age.

Thats hownit was done in the 70's and 80's when I was a kid. My 2 brothers and I were my parents tv remote and tv tuner when one of us had to get up to change the channel or move the rabbit ears until the channel came in. :P

TV-watching is no way to relax. If you want to relax, sleep.

I get more exercise searching for the remote than I do by going to the TV and flipping through the stations. I have found it the oddest of places.

I don't do television...but you should see my retired uncle's remote...it is smoothed down to the shape of his hand. It freaks me out..his life is based on the television. 8O

The remote is useful for muting Autism Speaks commercials.
