In Western culture, the finger (as in giving someone the finger), also known as the middle finger, the highway salute, the bird (as in flicking, flipping or flying the bird), or to flip someone off, is an obscene hand gesture, often meaning the phrase "f**k you" or "up yours". In North America it is performed by showing the back of the hand, extending the middle finger of the hand upwards while bending the other fingers down into the palm. In Britain and some other English speaking countries, it is performed with two fingers - a 'V sign' with palm inwards.

Origin
It is identified as the digitus impudicus (impudent finger) in Ancient Roman writings[1] and reference is made to using the finger in ancient Greek comedy to insult another person. The widespread usage of the finger in many cultures is likely due to the geographical influence of the Roman Empire and Greco-Roman civilization. Another possible origin of this gesture can be found in the first-century Mediterranean world, where extending the digitus impudicus was one of many methods used to divert the ever-present threat of the evil eye.[2]

Giving the fingers in Britain is actually related to british military archers. People would show that they still had their fingers and could still shot because in the middle ages the french would cut archers fingers off when captured.

Should you "stand up for yourself"? Who knows?

The guy might have been crazy, or high on drugs. He might have jumped out of his car and tried to bash you with a tire iron, or pulled a knife or gun.

You might have been a "macho type" with a carry permit. So you pull your piece and fill the scumbag full of lead.

Guess who is going to jail? You are!
