Wow your accent is suprisingly understandable..

I have a friend from Sydney, Australia... most of the time when I am talking to her I keep asking her to reapeat things!!

Sure. You can just speak in the accent you speak English in. In fact, because my mother's family is from Puerto Rico, I grew up speaking Spanish first. I had an accent until I was about 7, but it was slight. I had some difficulty with my 'r's and a big issue with the pronuciation of the soft 'th'. Outside of Spain Spanish, the 'th' sounds are rare or nonexistant. So I would pronounce the word 'three' as 'free' and I had a friend in the second grade named Theo and I would call him 'feo'. People used to make fun of me for this. I did not have issues with hard 'th' such as in the words 'that' or 'the'.
