I just saw the thread would you save a stranger, and then i got to thinking about something. Have you ever seen those shows where they show tragic accidents that people have either gotten seriously injured in or even died, and before they show it they always say "here is a film captured by a bystander" or something like that, like yesturday i saw a film of a family being washed down a river and being thrown over a cliff to their death, and the host of the show said"captured by a bystander" what i dont get is, How could you possibly stand there and just videotape it? I mean dont you think in a situation like that you would atleast put down the camera and be screaming or panicking or maybe trying to grab a branch to throw out to them so theyd ont get washed away? I just dont get how you could just stand there and film it.

Yeah I know, right?!

I saw a video that people had taken themselves, while they were fleeing a giant mudslide. What the hell, shouldn't they be screaming and running forward as fast as possible, instead of running backwards while filming their own doom?

Not everyone is a 'hero'. Hiding behind a video camera can be a coping mechanism used to distance oneself psychologically from the immediate threat of the situation. Where the alternative would probably be to run around, screaming like a headless chicken.

For the record, I agree that this sort of thing is absurd. However, while I can say that I would at least make an effort to help someone, I think we have to be fair and admit that one can not realistically make that judgement unless we are in that same situation. People do strange things when their lives are on the line for real.

The world is full of video-taping, bystanding idiots. I don't know how, but I've just come to accept that.

Makes me wonder how many were filmed with mobile phones and how many 'bystanders' dialled 999/911 before they started to film.
Just thought of another thing , do they sell the footage or give it to the stations/production companies?
my guess would be they sell it, or a large majority do.
