My 12 year old AS son loves cars.

His favorite? A 1997 Ford Taurus station wagon. (don't ask me!)

Yeah, and his favorite girl in school is huge and has a really, bad attitude!
He thinks "her hair looks cool in a ponytail".

Go figure.

was going to do a thread today on cars.

am getting a car on motability, and have been got off the idea of a zafira by staff because of the sloppy power of the low engine and not needing the amount of space its got as it just uses more petrol.
one of the staff have got am onto the idea of a VW passat,or skoda octavia-her husbands got an octavia and said its identical to the passat, and uses all VW parts but is cheaper, though after she looked it up on motability, the passat turned out cheaper.
does anyone have an opinion on either of these? whats the ride like in them? the staff swears by her husbands octavia.
dad swears by skoda, even long before they were part of VW.

I love PT Cruisers with the wooded paneling. Looks even better with surfboards attached to the top.

The Ocatvia is the Skoda version of the Golf/Jetta, not the Passat. The Skoda version of the Passat is the Superb.

I've been in Octavias and Passats. Like most VW Group products I find them very nice in a bland sort of way. I do not think you could really go wrong with either one.

OK... Skoda - no. A taxi driver went through 3 head gaskets in some short months. You don't want to be spending out on new headgaskets. The work on the parts themselves is cheap, the labour to get AT the parts, is not. I know I have had to do a couple headgaskets myself.

A Zafira diesel my Uncle has, it's got plenty of power in it and ideal space.

The idea behind a motability is to draft up what you need and what you want from it. Then match up the cars to see which fits it. A cheap car could be a nightmare to live with.

I'm getting really pissed with all the cars in Europe. I find that people refer to Europe as from Portugal to where ever it is in the West, near Russia or thereabout. But people don't seem to include the UK as IN Europe. It's just England or "the UK"

All the cars built are built as left hand drive with all the controls for left hand drive. Front wheel drive engines oriented in a way that distributes the weight FOR left hand drive. Even cars designed and BUILT in the UK are like this. The cars are just converted and most of the controls stay where they are.

Why is it Asian countries can do a complete conversion except engine orientation? I find so many people saying about an Asian car, the stalks are on the wrong way round. Before I found this out, I wondered if the same was for left hookers or not.

You see, most cars in the world are left hand drive, and therefore the stalk to adjust the signal is on the left (near the window) out of the way of the transmission. On UK cars, the stalk should be the same way, near the window, but it is NOT. They keep the exact SAME stalks as the left hand drive countries. So annoying. I felt at home driving a Hyundai Accent (Korean) I could keep the same hand on the wheel and the other on the gear stick all the time.
From this, I am really swayed to go Jap or convert a foreign car into RHD completely.

And some people call the French "Surrender Monkeys" I fear it is the British who are the surrender monkeys ...

I suppose my ideal car would have to be the Nissan (Renault owned, feared ruined "handling") GTR would be best for me... I am surprised to see 4 door R34's (or Sylvia's converted to R34 rear and front)

I suppose my driving skill will advance more than those who have been driving longer. I know someone who towed my trailer and managed to smash the trailer wheel into a kerb.

I wonder how many people think horsepower is everything ... The real figures will always be the power to weight ratio

1st car was a 97 camry ce. After a few accidents, it was still more reliable than a 96 GT I rented.
The 92 LS 400: Before it was impounded, i took out a basic 96 300zx by a long shot.
Mechanics? I was interested, though disliked working with a lot of people.

I like a 1969 Shelby Mustang. I also wouldn't mind a 1967 Jaguar like the one in the Austin Powers movies.

I wouldn't exactly say a lambo or a ferrari has a throaty exhaust. It's nice, but it's not the lope of the pro stock rolling iron.

I go pro stock, American, not Rice Boy. Nor Euro Boy. Also, I go pre 1980. Old Skool as they say. Those are the terms of my local racing community, not my personal preferences or racism. Unless you can be racist to cars.

I currently own a 1996 red v6 Mustang convertible.

Looking to upgrade...

Would settle for...

Still over 300hp but easier on the wallet for gas.
