In case others don't know what it means, ''faffing about'' means wasting time, can't make your mind up, taking ages doing something, adding too many unnecessary tasks to the day, disorganisation, keeping people waiting, doing too much in a short amount of time, etc.

I was just wondering if this agitates anyone else here - or if anyone else tends to faff about themselves. I do know some people who waste time and then make the day feel like one big rush because of too much wasted time. One of my friends takes ages to make her mind up in shops, and sometimes we have been in somewhere for about an hour, and then that's a whole hour wasted where we could have got lunch and eaten by then and I could have caught the bus home. Usually I arrive to see her at 9 o'clock in the morning but I end up having to catch the bus home at 3 because of so much time wasted by my friend faffing around too much and keeping me waiting, whereas I only spend time with other friends for less than 4 hours, but with this friend 6 hours go by and we still haven't done everything we planned to do. And sometimes I get a bit worn out but I don't like to say anything because I know it's just the way she is.

I'm not the type of person to faff about. I like to be all ready and I like to nip in and out of shops as quick as I can, maybe take more time if I'm on my own but if I've got someone with me I feel bad keeping them waiting for too long.

I had problems with my ex girlfriends because of that. They would come to me in a panic when they were about out of time & it really stressed me out. I do procrastinate a lot sometimes but I'm also very OCDish so I usually have a schedule & routine to get what I need done so I don't have to rush. It's a very good thing I do because I do NOT handle pressure or stress well

I've been finding myself faffing about the past few days. I must be distracted by the fact that Christmas is on its way. I should stop faffing about and do my laundry after supper, so I can pack my favourite T-shirts to bring to my parents place over the Christmas weekend.

Dear Joe90, I like your phrase very much, and intend to steal it from you and use it as much as possible when Certain People do that.

If it bothers you that much next time, just gently remind your friend that you're bored and are open to doing something, anything else. You won't necessarily ruin anything just for speaking up a bit.

That's a better word than the usual 4 letter F word. I can use that one with my daughter. And yes, it is irritating.

Yes it is a good word. Do others than Brits use it I wonder? It should get more use.

I dislike others faffing about when i'm in high-focus mode, but due to executive dysfunction when left to my own devices (and wasting only MY time) can spend days in periods of extended faffage.

It is amusing to overhear anyone use the phrase 'oh will you just stop faffing about', even if it relates to annoyance it has a comedic edge that makes me smile.

I use "faffing about", too. Also a noun, "faff". As in, what a lot off faff (bother/complication/etc)!

As to whether it bothers me, I get ready very quickly when there's other people involved, and if others are faffing about it really completely annoys me.

But when it's just me, I can faff about with the best of them.
