Who is your favourite author? Why? And what is their best novel?

I don't know, it's hard to say. I love Harry Potter so I could say Rowling. But, I also love H.P. Lovecraft's works.
I love the Harry Potter books because I enjoy the world that was created by J.K. Rowling, and I've grew up reading the books and the matured with me.
As for Lovecraft, I love horror and how he writes about madness and unfathomable monsters.

Franz Kafka, I could really relate to his cynical views of the world and I found his works to be rather enjoyable. Favorite book of his would probably be The Trial.

Christopher Pike

A lot of his stuff is dark, and goes into the psychological aspect of humanity. There's also an element of supernatural and lots about the nature of God v devil. (not in the Christian sense)

I'd be hard pressed to pick one novel as the best, though.

It's funny, considering how much I read, how few authors I consider my favorites. There are just a few I'm obsessive about:

1. Philip K. Dick
2. Arthur Conan Doyle
3. Patricia Highsmith
4. H. P. Lovecraft
5. Dashiell Hammett

Their best?

1. Ubik or A Scanner Darkly
2. The Adventures or The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes
3. The Talented Mr. Ripley or Ripley's Game
4. The Call of Cthulhu or At the Mountains of Madness
5. Red Harvest or The Maltese Falcon

Reading Conrad right now. Not sure if I like him or not.

I don't know if I have a favorite. Most of my reading after childhood has been more technical non-fiction and I am unaware who is decent among contemporary authors. Maybe, I can get some ideas from here. :)

Tolkien, Douglas Adams, Preston& Child, Ursula K. Le Guin, Jefferson Bass, Robert Crais, and many others must be on the list. I rather enjoy reading....Sylkat

Those are off the top of my head, in no particular order. Different times, I like different writers.

I'm really into Murakami's stuff at the moment, and I haven't read enough to say which ones are my favorite.

Hi Sylkat
You've mentioned my favourite author, John Connolly. I am a big fan and read all his books. I like him because its dark, menacing with a supernatural undertone. John writes in a way that just pulls me in to the story and locks me there. His best book is "the burning soul" (followed closely by "bad men" "the killling kind" and "the lovers")
I also like Peter James, Koji Suzuki, Lucie Whitehouse, Mark Mills, Sam Bourne and Tony Richards.
Thanks to all for replys, I'll check out some of these authors mentioned :D

Three of my favorites are Arthur Doyle, Dan Brown, and Raymond Khoury.

I think their best work are
The Hound of the Baskervillies - Doyle
The Lost Symbol - Brown
The Last Templar - Khoury
:)

My favourite authors have got to be Terry Pratchett cause the discworld novels are so great and the characters are hilarious and Darren Shan cause I loved the Demonata saga with all the gore and demons...and whatnot.
