Cats or dogs?

From the topics I have read it seems like a lot of us are cat people. I am a cat person too. This make sense since cats are usally quiet and calm animals. So which do you prefer?

I have a cat and a quiet and calm dog.

I have both, so couldn't vote a preference.

I'm allergic to cats. But it would be nice to have a pet that doesn't bark and growl...

I like both cats and dogs, but if I can only have one I'd have a cat (like at the moment).

The preference for cats isn't that they're calmer or anything, its that when a cat is spending its time around me I'm sure its the cat's choice. That means that its far more comforting for me to a cat to come up to me when I'm upset than a dog to come up to me. If a cat is comforting me its because the cat wants to, if a dog is comforting me I don't know whether it wants to.

I've got a cat that is absolutely attached to me and can be very playful. No wonder she is nicked 'dogcat.'

The dog I have doesn't always spend time with me but when he does I know it's his choice. He can tell when I'm about to have a seizure and will sit with me and I can tell when he will have one and I'll take care of him, and he knows this.

I'm a dog person though. I don't care too much about their social skills but I love their energy and intelligence. I'm interested in their history too. And actually prefer dogs that aren't tame and trusting to humans.
When you consider where they came from and their ability to read our own body language so well it's remarkable.

People say I have a way with animals. I just know you don't run up to a dog and pat it, you've got to let them smell you and know you are no threat to them. I was very standoffish with Bear, the dog we have now because of the expression he gave me and his cowering body language. Turns out he was from an abusive home. He doesn't snap and is quiet but I picked that up in him right away and kept my distance because I thought he was likely to bite me, though he never has.
I like the relationship we have. He doesn't jump up on me or get excited, but will sit near me and I'll pet him.
He even gets along with my playful hyper kitty, Lyra. More than the other two cats in the house.
I actually think one cat really doesn't like her and is making the other cat go after her. I told her this morning, "Jazz, I know you don't like her but it's her house too now and she is going to eat her breakfast in front of you, like it or not." And Jazz didn't hiss like she usually does but walked away. The human has spoken.

Dogs really help with my hyperactive streak too. The most fantastic day for me was the day after my birthday when a kelpie and staffy cross came over and I just played fetch with them. Such a beautiful kelpie. I took photos of them. I want a kelpie now.
My love for dogs is hard to put into words. But I just feel like a kid when I went over to a friends of my mum's house and I 'd immediately go outside and play with her shepherd/dingo cross. Even at 26 I turn into that little kid who just wants to play with the dogs.

I can't like both equally

I prefer dogs over cats. I love having a pet that I can train and take for walks. I'm a relatively active person and like having a more active pet. I love my yellow lab.

Cats really don't do much. My cats don't do much more than sleep or creep around my room at night(quite annoying while trying to sleep). Cat's are very difficult to train and most people can't get a cat to cooperate during walks.

I will say dogs but they can be hard work and I have 3 wild ones. They can sense feelings like depression and anxiety.
My dogs give me affection, love and companionship.

Cats tend to be quiet and well behaved, whereas the dogs I've met have either been violent or stupid. It's no contest for me.

cats for me. mostly. but i have a few virtual dogs i love if that counts.

even though my kitty is a spoiled brat i still love her. course i did spoil her ^^;

Cats are quiet, don't smell like much, and are generally non-demanding socially. I prefer them to dogs. But it feels odd to make such general statements about entire species, because there are cats that are just annoying, and cats that are wonderful, and cats that are smelly, and cats that are like Velcro clinging to you because they can't bear to be away from you. They are all different.

But that doesn't mean I don't like dogs. I'm actually quite fond of dogs, especially intelligent ones that you can teach things to, and dogs that are big enough to keep up with you on long walks and not get tired. I don't have the time or space for a dog right now; but someday I'd like to adopt one. He'll have to suffer through regular baths--the doggy smell is a major issue for me--but dogs have their own charm even to a person who was introduced to animals in general by interacting with cats.

Even though they are high maintenance pets, I prefer dogs because they are personable and truly loyal. Traits which cats universally lack.
