Affecting people's accents is part of my latent echolalia; I have a habit of slipping into random ones I've acquired. My paternal side of the family hail from the Ohio River Valley, so they 'warsh' their hair and sleep when they are 'tarred'. Strangely though I've never got into that around them. I was born and raised in California and people often mistake me for Texan. There is definitely an East LA accent.

Have you never received a punch in the mouth when people realise you're copying them and think you're taking the piss?

Also, my accent: Central-East Lancashire. A "Northern monkey" accent, to you foreigners. ;)

You have a good voice for TV and radio.

The South

Philadelphia

The Inland North

The West

The Northeast

Boston

North Central

Someone I knew online said she could defiantly tell I was from Louisiana when I talked

I got a southern accent. Hell no.

That's a Southern accent you've got there. You may love it, you may hate it, you may swear you don't have it, but whatever the case, we can hear it.

I also found this, which I find ironic considering where I live.

Oh! I didn't realize the bolded text in the OP was a link. According to the quiz I have a Western accent.

Your accent is the lowest common denominator of American speech. Unless you're a SoCal surfer, no one thinks you have an accent. And really, you may not even be from the West at all, you could easily be from Florida or one of those big Southern cities like Dallas or Atlanta.

true. my daughter noticed i have a bit of a drawl though... i say "god" like "gawd", for example. i think i picked it up from watching american television.

I try to mirror with it, and you may be right, they could be thinking I'm making a show of them and I'm oblivious

For those that were oblivious, the bold part of my OP is a link to a test.

You may think you speak "Standard English straight out of the dictionary" but when you step away from the Great Lakes you get asked annoying questions like "Are you from Wisconsin?" or "Are you from Chicago?" Chances are you call carbonated drinks "pop."
-Not surprised by my result as my mother and my entire family on that side comes from Michigan-
I was always told growing up that I did not have a southern accent even though I grew up in Virginia, but I think helped that I was raised outside of the Nations capitol.

The way it works is: if you are American, then you tend to think that people with a "Standard American" accent don't have an accent. If you are not American, then you tend to think that people with a "Standard American" accent have an "American" accent, as opposed to a more specific accent.

Anyway, I have a New Zealand accent. I guess you could call it "Standard Pakeha", since it isn't a Maori-influenced accent and it isn't one of those weird Southland accents.

EDIT: I sound pretty much like this guy:

Obviously, he's intentionally using lots of words which "show off" the accent's unusual features, but the accent itself is not exaggerated.

I'm Pa Dutch but I speak fairly normal. When growing up some of the kids from surrounding towns had some pretty strong "Dutch" accents. (Pa Dutch accents sound like someone from Germany.) Today the accent is dying out because the locals no longer speak German as much as the did back then.

That's a pity. Dutch accents are so cute. I'm going to slightly move away from the topic of North American accents here and post this.

Even to me, this sounds confusing. Mark Rutte is not the most intelligent or charming premier we've had in a while, but I would never have guessed that this man's English might be worse than his predecessor's. That's mainly because of the hilarious accent, but also because he's saying absolutely nothing and trying to disguise that with fancy words.

Judging by how you talk you are probably from north Jersey, New York City, Connecticut or Rhode Island. Chances are, if you are from New York City (and not those other places) people would probably be able to tell if they actually heard you speak.

Am more that happy with that :D
My own accent is Scouse. Well both New York and my home town of Liverpool has lots of connections between each other. My city has been called in the past the New York of Europe, so am cool with that result.

I have a Northern California accent. I say dude a lot, as well as totally, like, and hella. However, I do use a lot of internet terminology in real life, so I guess you can say its a cross between Internet and NorCal. However, I do wish I had Tommy Wiseau's accent.
