Automatics are a very american thing. In europe 90% of the cars on the road are manuals, and most people learn to drive in and take a manual transmission test. In the UK at least, if you take your test in an auto its kind of looked down upon and you only really do it if you cant pass your full license test. You are also then only licensed to drive in an auto, which are more expensive, rarer and use more fuel.

People with an auto only license would be seen by the majority of people as bad drivers here, so I sort of see where OP is coming from. Saying that, I drive an auto at the moment. I do have a full license though, having taken my test in a manual car, and I drove one for a while before I got my current car.

A manual transmission sounds a bit awkward if you're going 4-wheel driving off-road or towing something really heavy. But they're certainly better in a sports car.

I always thought a manual transmission is only better if it's in a fast powerful sports car. Otherwise, there isn't much of a point to it. Learning to drive one is easy though, and not being able to sounds like a chick thing.

They're obviously better in a sports car because you can rev the engine up really high to the redline before shifting, and also down shift when you want for more power.

New dual clutch transmissions can not only shift faster than you can blink, they also use computers to shift at the best point in the powerband (redline is usually too high, most cars run out of torque up there) See figure A
Image
notice how power drops after 6,000rpm. Thats because the engine just cant get the air supply it needs. Revving more is just unnecesary strain. But also notice the drastic drop in torque (which is what you feel as acceleration).

Also notice how the torque and power intersect at 5,252 rpm. That has to do with the formula for horsepower. every car will have those lines intersect at 5252 rpm.

Well?? Why do men who can drive only automatic cars, like me, get responses like "p****", "Grandma", etc.

C'mon people be more mature.... (I didn't get that response personally but it's pretty common for many men). It's so stupid. Sometime I wish I was a woman. Men are generally expected to achieve more, a high salary job, a good house, be savvy with how to repair everything.... While if a woman is unemployed it's considered "ok" because she has to take care of the children, laundry, cooking etc. I mean I ain't a chauvinist - I advocate the 50-50 method.... but c'mon those conservative "primitive" men are annoying me! dang it XD

I used to hear things like this when I was young, but it's rather silly if you ask me. I drive a stick (I'm female) and while it might offer a little more control of the vehicle, it's not enough to matter for normal driving conditions, and in fact in heavy traffic it makes it more difficult. If I were to choose a car today to drive in heavy traffic it would be an automatic.

The only benefit that I can think of as distinct is that you can push start a manual transmission car. It's also easier to slow the car down by downshifting. BUT as a wise man once reminded me, it's cheaper to replace the brakes than the transmission, so why wouldn't you just use your brakes?

They used to say manuals used less fuel, but I think with newer auto transmissions that's no longer true.

One downside is that cars with manual transmission don't have cruise control, which helps a lot to avoid driver fatigue on long drives.

The whole macho car image thing - sheesh - aren't we past that yet?

That's interesting! I didn't know anywhere had different tests. Here in California you get tested in whatever car you show up with and given the same license - unless it's a motorcycle or very large truck, or you're going to carry passengers for a living.

I've driven automatics since 1989. Mainly it's because I had a chest injury when I was 21 and it made stick-shifting actually quite painful on a long drive.

As regards being a p**** ... ? ... well, I was born a man but had a sex-change when I was 48 ... so I'm wondering whether the kind of car you drive might be a clinical marker for gender dysphoria ... but then, this is getting quite surreal ... %-)

... nowadays I drive a Skoda Octavia with a dual-shift gearbox. I often don't notice when it changes gear and the fuel economy is the best I've had ... 68 mpg on one run in the UK ... :-)

A stick is much better if you are going off road, in my opinion. Also, towing would be easier because you could keep it in a lower gear for more power.

Just my 2 cents worth here as a big fan of NHRA drag racing... the fastest cars at the races (nitro dragsters and funny cars, which regularly go over 300 miles per hour in 1000 feet), don't have stick shifts in them. I certainly wouldn't call anyone with the guts to drive one of those cars a p****.

Though driven a stick will allow you to go faster I prefer a automatic because it is easy to drive.

Because autos are for p*****s and if you wanna be a real man you should drive a rock crusher manual tranny with worn out synchros and shift bushings.

The vehicle can't roll backwards in a forward gear though, but a manual transmission can when the clutch is pushed down which isn't good for going in 4WD uphill obviously. Automatics also can be manually switched to lower gears like L1/L2.

I never thought of my self as ultra-macho, LOL, but when I bought my first car, it was a 5-speed stick, and I just got in and drove. I had been riding dirt bikes for a few years already, so I had the understanding of the clutch and shifting. In fact, I remember when I got in that Subaru Brat and just decided I would teach myself the stick shift, I didn't really have to learn anything, and I only stalled it once. I had been taught to drive in an automatic, and had a fair amount of driving experience (for a teenager, I mean), and therefore all I had to master was the stick shift; as opposed to a totally new driver needing to learn traffic and braking, steering, etc., in addition to shifting.

I have both automatic and stick shift vehicles now, and honestly I prefer stick shift on Diesel-engine vehicles, as an automatic makes them too slow to start off. With gasoline engines, I don't really care one way or the other, but I will say that some automatics I've had, are dangerous, in that there is a delay when shifting into reverse from drive. If you're trying to make a 3-point turn on a busy street, there is no time to wait for an automatic transmission to bang into reverse. With a stick, you can get reverse the very instant that you come to the stop in the turn, and be backing up in milliseconds.

I have plenty of experience and tricks for manual trans cars on hills. I use the parking brake trick: Assuming a red light, I put the parking brake on, and wait. Then when it's time to go, I get in 1st, and as I let the clutch out and give gas, I slowly release the parking brake to let the engine take hold of the car, and away it goes. It's a skill, but you will develop it very well if you do it regularly. Same thing off road. I've gotten stuck occasionally here on our ranch in muddy weather, with my 4x4 Toyota Diesel, and it has a 2-speed transfer case. I've learned all kinds of tricks to rock it back & forth, and use the brakes and steering to make the truck spin in place to aim for a dryer patch of land to get up onto, etc. Too complicated to explain, but trust me it's much easier with a manual shift and some experience, than with an automatic.
