So me and my mom were at Walmart to buy some Copenhagen (chew tobacco) for my dad. After waiting in line for a really long time, my mom asked for the only kind my dad likes. The person who worked there then said "I'm sorry, but we can't let you buy any, you are under 18" I nearly burst out laughing. My mom is 39!! !! How the heck would she have an 11 year old kid if she was 18?!??

Just wanted to say that because it was funny XD

Maybe she thought you were her sister. Did it get sorted out? Did she have ID on her to show the lady?

When I used to smoke, I was often carded for tobacco products, even into my forties. People are always shocked when they learn my age. I guess it's nice to look young.

If you live in the U.S., aren't you asked for proof-of-age every single time you want to buy something that is age sensitive?

WalMart and Target are forced to slide a driver's license or ID card into the cash register in order for the price to ring up. If they don't, it won't work. I guess they did it that way because checkers would sell to friends under 18 by lying and saying they had looked at an ID to verify. Whenever I buy spray paint at WalMart, which in CA requires you to be 18, I have to give ID. And I'm 46.

Mal Wart refused to sell me wine because I didn't have my ID,they card my mom who looks her age. Some places just ask your birhdate and punch that in.I've been carded in liquor stores before. It sort of pissed a friend off, they are the same age as me and didn't get carded  The convenience store that I use mostly never cards me,but they do people they don't know.and my regular booze store does not card me and I don't have to swipe anything. As far as my experience goes Mal Wart is the only one that is a pain about it.And they do not have to be,I've got booze in there later and did not have to show any ID.

It's not "being a pain", MissLizard - it's "complying with the law". Retailers selling alcohol or tobacco are legally required to verify the ages of those purchasing from them, and can be fined if they're caught letting it slide. And around here at least, the state's really into sending undercovers of various ages out to check into this...

Yeah. Nationwide in Australia it's the same only 18 is the standard age for stuff like buying spray paint, alcohol, cigarettes, buying from pubs/clubs etc. However, instead of having an ID automatically sent to you when you're 18, you have to apply for it through the dept of Transport here in Queensland, and believe me, that is a pain. I could go on about government bureaucracy but that would fill a book :)

Supposed to be, but 4 times out of 10 they don't.

They didn't verify the age of the OP's mum though. They refused to sell her tobacco before they even checked her age.

It does really depend on the retailer, also the staff working the counter at the time of purchase. Appearance is another factor but I won't go into detail about that.

I have been mistaken for a 16yo at an auto shop a couple times as well when buying small items like lightbulbs and fuses (i used to do a lot of electrical work up until a few days ago).

That happened at Fred Meyer. When I went to GameStop, they questioned me if I was old enough to get Fallout 3. :(

(Well, I have it now so it's no big deal.)

Gamestop wouldn't sell my brother a game because he was under 17 at the time and the game was rated M. So he gave me his money and had me buy the game for him and he handed it to me right in front of the cashier and he let me buy the game and then I gave it to him right there on the spot.

I worked at WalMart & due to federal laws they require ID for tobaco pruducts & alcohol for anyone who doesn't look over a certain age & I cant remember the ages off the top of my head but I'm sure they were over 30. I had to take a little coarse teaching quiz on computer about it even thou I was not a cashier; everyone hired there is required to take it.

Who gets an i.d. automatically sent to them? We have to get ours from the state department of public safety. Either a driver's licence or a non-driver i.d.. So I know what you mean about the bureaucracy.

I managed to get into a nightclub to see a band when I was 16 because I won passes off the radio.
