im a 24yr old female from iowa, recently my 2 friends suggested i have aspergers, so i took a couple online tests. each one said its most likly that im autisic. my parents dont belive aspergers is a real thing, along with the rest of my family. its clear to them and myself (even as a child) that we think in completly different ways, that im not normal to them. they think its just how i am, that i just was damaged mentally, and not that i could have aspergers, that im just a freak. im having so many problems understanding and geting others to fully understand aspergers. the way my family treats my "issues" makes me feel like there is somthing wrong with me, makes me feel like they look at aspergers like its down syndrym. i just need to talk to someone, someone like me, someone who understands

First: Welcome to WrongPlanet confusedinIowa!

I can sorta relate; I have trouble understanding others and people have trouble understanding me.

Feel free to PM me if you want to talk!

Well, you're in the right place. There area lot of understanding people here on WP.

As an aside, I went to Iowa State U. for 2 1/2 years. Brings back some good memories of my punk days.

This is a common reaction. You know it, but others downplay the possibility. In some way, they don't want to acknowledge the truth.

Welcome to Wrong Planet!

My family likes to use my Aspergers diagnosis against me mainly because I'm the only male in my family. They'll stop eventually, but given their sociopathic tendencies, I wouldn't be surprised if they continue.

Feel free to PM me whenever you want. :)

I relate to how you feel with your family somewhat. My mom suspected I could be autistic sense I was a toddler but my doc laughed & said "Nick's just being Nick" so getting a diagnoses was never pursued till a couple years after I graduated high school(I had a bad depression due to my life circumstances & my 1st relationship ending) partly because they felt getting the diagnoses would be very difficult & they'd spend a lot of money for nothing(it was spent by me pursuing it because Aspergers was ruled out in favor of lots of other things because even the so-called experts didn't fully understand it or the cause & effect with my issues) & they felt having it diagnosed wouldn't change anything for me sense they're weren't any services or resources available in my area except for the majorly low functioning on the spectrum. My parents do think I have Aspergers but they really don't understand my issues or my issues with other things related to dyslexia that I was diagnosed with sense kindergarten & a couple physical disabilities that weren't diagnosed till my senior year that they knew I had. My parents are very inconsistent & change plans at the last minute but I love predictability & regularity & they got upset when I had problems handling their changing plans. They say some hurtful jokes about me for some of the problems I have that they clearly don't understand & they know I have major problems interpreting their jokes. Tell me very incontinent things like brag about how helpful I am when I'm helping them with something but comment on how lazy I am a couple days latter when I ask them do help me with something or do something I have problems doing or because I'm not working due to my disabilities limiting me despite that I was doing my best to find a job. I'm doing alot better sense I moved in with my girlfriend a little over a year ago; she's somewhat on the spectrum herself. She noticed some of the problems I have with them.

You can try messaging people who suggested you PM them & say something really simple in the tittle if your not sure what like "I thought I'd take you up on the PM offer" & then comment on something they said in their post or ask a question or something. In case you cant tell I'm kind of awkward at starting conversations too  but lots of us are too here so no reason to feel bad about it :) Your Welcome to PM me if you'd like & you could mention how you relate or don't relate to what I posted. I'm not sure if you'd like to chat with or not sense I know I don't fully relate to your situation & I was making a post here anyways so others can critique my idea ono how to initiate a PM.
