Want to make simple photo collage. How?

I'm fairly tech-savvy, but not being very visually artistic I don't ever use photo editors.

I'm on Ubuntu.

I have 36 photos I want to make into a simple, rectangular collage so I can have it printed on canvas or similar.

What is the simplest way to do this?

The free, online collage makers have photo limits or less than 30.

Any help would be super!!

I think GIMP (the Photoshop-like image manipulation program) gets installed by default but if not, you can find and install it via the software centre (or whatever they call it these days - I tend to use the shell for this stuff; it would be sudo apt-get install gimp if you want to do it that way).

Then, and not wishing to appear rude - search Google with "make photo collage with gimp".
That very quickly returned more step-by-step tutorials (many with video) than it's probably healthy to know about...
