This seems like a question I have a lot of answers to, I have been a lifelong insomniac and up until I got prescribed a sedative antidepressant I would frequently go days without sleep since childhood depending on how my mood was cycling. I used to work on literally no sleep at all and nap in afternoons sporadically and go school/college on two or three hours sleep all my life, my experience at university was a disaster for several reasons, one of which was my haphazard ability to lose consciousness and rest and to manage different conflicts I was dealing with, unpredictable sleep really didn't help there.
I manage to sleep alright for on average half of the week these days which is a big upgrade, because I get knocked out by the medicine, the other half is hit or miss how much I get, sometimes a few hours, sometimes plenty, but I also have delayed sleep phase syndrome and nothing will ko me before 2am anyway, I can count everytime in my life I've slept before 2am, my gp told me I'll need a night shift in the future. I used to guzzle diphenhydramine like a crack fiend and I tried herbal sleep aids before that and you have to take 10 before you feel even drowsy if you're an insomniac haha. I've been prescribed benzos in the past and I'm definitely not a benzo guy because if anything the three times I was on them I had more energy and pizazz than if I'd just had three days of 12 hour slumbering!
