When I was in high school I took an electronics repair class. By 12th grade, I had become so disgusted with the school that, yes, I squandered all my opportunities of progressing in the electronics field. Consequently, all my grades suffered. By then, and I didn't know it, my autism had made me unable to socialize with people, or relate to them, so I distanced myself from everyone.

Can you relate to Adam, the autistic man in the movie "Adam"?

ENORMOUS difficulty. First, there's my West Indian accent. People hear it right away. Stupid people used to mock me and call me Jamaican. I'm from Trinidad & Tobago. Just trying to speak like a Yank makes me stutter and trip over my words.

Then there's the fact I'm gay. Growing up in a black neighborhood, being gay is the worst crime imaginable, thus, I had to pretend i was straight or face bullying.

To add to my immigrant & gay status, now there's the autism angle. I DON'T do small talk. It irritates me to the ends and depths of my soul. I've TRIED to pretend I could be social, but you know how I got by? By drinking like a fish. No alcohol, no socializing for Robin.

I'm too old now to give a flying f*ck what people think. I don't fit in, and for many years I tried. Now I just say f*ck it. I am what I am. (Took me years to be able to believe that, though).

Yeah, I have my difficulties as, not only having the social problems that often go along with being autistic, but deriving from a family where divorce was common even at the age of 1year made developing friendships very problematic. In fact, I'll go on record to say that I did not have any authentic friends growing up throughout my school years.

Yes. There is definitely some overlap. Both autism and ADD cause attention problems and executive functioning issues. I am diagnosed with both.

Most of the time people think I'm a Jamaican like Usain Bolt, but I'm a Trini.

Depends on how you define it. I've never been without a roof over my head but I have had to officially live in a mental hospital because I had to give up my home.
