Seeing it that way, it would be more accurate to say that apathy is the opposite of any strong emotion, for instance love, hate, rage, elation, etc.
I still think hate and love are more correct opposites though as love (among other things) means caring deeply, wanting only the best for someone and be afraid of bad things happening to them, feeling warmth when thinking of them and miss them when they're not around, while hate (among other things) means having a very strong negative reaction to someone, possibly wanting everything bad for them and feel schadenfreude when things go wrong for them, feel like everything tightens and knots up inside when thinking of them and enjoy not having them around.
They are true opposites, while apathy and indifference are just the opposites of having strong emotions, be it negative or positive.
i would say that apathy is more strongly contrasted to emotions that lead to physical outbursts and violence, such as rage. overwhelming sadness is a very strong emotion indeed, but IMO it is more similar to apathy in that both emotions may cause one to not want to do anything.
hate and love are more traditional opposites, yes. though it might just come down to what aspects of those emotions are worth considering when you compare and contrast them.
