Are you always that rude? -_-

It's not typical for me, but this is a subject that I am intensely opinionated about.

Nothing you said was even remotely rude. He just doesn't want to be challenged on his opinion. This mentality he has is starting to fade away in modern society, which is good.

The Fergie song London Bridge when it was played on the radio would start out with "oh snap, oh snap, oh snap, oh snap". For a long time, I thought those were the actual lyrics to the song. Didn't know that it was a censored version of a song that said "oh s**t".

I wonder why they didn't use the substitution, "shoot" instead. or with today's digital magic, they coulda put a sound effect in there just as easily.

There no such thing as bad words, language is an invention and so is the idea of foul language. Throughout history what has been considered bad or offensive has changed, still in modern times it changes from one culture to another. Words themselves can't be bad only the intent and meaning behind them, to be offended by a word without context could be a choice, could be social conditioning I don't now but definitely not necessary.

I think I was kind of rude actually, but I was trying to make a point.

the above recording illustrates a major pitfall of censorship, the mangling of meaning.

...There was a Swing-Era song called " Ole Man Mose " whose chorus went " Ole Man Mose has done kicked the bucket , bucket , bucket , bucket..." - and the word would tuurrrrn into , uh huh , " f**k it , f**k it , f**k it..." ! 8O :(
In 1970 or so a group had a Top 40 song called " Funky Nassau (Pts. 1 and 2) " (about Nassau in the Bahamas , I'm sorry , ASPartofme  )...how did its chorus go ?
" Funky Nassau ! Funky Nassau ! "
And how did , I'm afraid , I teach my younger brother to sing that ? Uh huh .
" f*****g as*hole ! f*****g as*hole ! "
Oh dear    .

pretty rude TBH.

i appreciate precise use of swearing for emphasizing meaning/stance or making an argument, but dilution occurs when they are thrown around carelessly, and soon they no longer carry the weight that they once did when people showed more tact.

then you'll jyst need to make up new swear words.

regarding swearing in songs, i like 'censorship' when the offending words are replaced with softer ones carrying (more or less) the same meaning, as opposed to just silencing them or the fadeout.

ice cubes "it was a good day" is a pretty good example of the former IMO.

One of my all time favorite songs is by an Australian band called the Angels and the song is called 'Am I ever going to see your face again.' It doesn't need to be censored because there are no swear words in it but pretty much all Australians who grew up listening to it know the unsung words which are 'No way, get f#cked, f#ck off!' and this what we would sing at Angels gigs. Ah, they were fun times.

I am still surprised that Lou Reed's "Walk on the Wild Side" did not get censored back in '72. Same with Chuck Berry's "My Ding a Ling" that year.

Melanie's "Brand New Key" did have problems getting airplay and was controversial. After all "I've got a pair of Roller Skates and you got a brand new key" must be about intercourse. And "I've Been Around the world" OMG

Looking back on it is pretty obvious the gender double standards of the era were involved. There were a whole bunch of songs sung by guys referencing love growing or my love growing that aired, no controversy at all.

back in the day, I remember they'd put on a Janis Joplin song "move over" that more often than not, they'd fade it before it got to the lyric "GD fool" but sometimes they'd play it to the end. the Stones song "it's all over now" was played back in the 60s despite "half-assed" being in the lyrics. I read later on that some stations would not play that song, usually in the south, same for Janis. never heard "wild side" on anything but FM.

There was a song by Wild Cherry, released in 1976, which went: "Play that Funky Music, White Boy."

I thought the lyrics went: Play that f****n' music......"

I used to like "Funky Nassau." I heard it all the time--around the same time that "In the Summertime" by Mungo Jerry was popular.

Thanks.

The hit by Three Dog Night is entitled "Joy to the World". But the correct lyrics ARE "Jeremiah was a bullfrog".
