I think it's kind of sexist since it implies girls are inferior for having smaller muscles and stuff.

I also think the phrase "man cold" is sexist and it really bugs me. Right now there's an ad at the drug store where I regularly shop and get my prescriptions that shoes a close-up of a guy who looks like he's been stung in the rear end by a wasp. And it says "Man colds come on strong". There's another ad in the same store that shows a woman that says "I don't have time to be sick". I hate that ad too. If you have a highly contagious illness that can't be cured and must run its course you can't go running around acting you're perfectly healthy. The ad implies that if you're a woman who actually does rest and take time off during a minor illness, she's a horrible, selfish person. I mean, how DARE I, I mean, she, avoid doing things that could end up making her a lot sicker or infect other people!!

I've been wanting to complain to the store but I don't think it'll really change anything. Society has got it in its thick skull that a guy turning into a whiny loser baby when getting a sniffle is normal and okay while a woman on the verge of slipping into a coma must force herself to continue being the one and only caretaker. :(

My mother says that when my dad gets a cold she has to make sure he actually rests and looks after it instead of ignoring it like he normally does so it doesn't end up getting worse. Especially since he has COPD. Maybe when my dad was young guys were expected to just "suck it up" or whatever. But it's so much better imo than seeing some thirtysomething manchild in in a commercial his whining and moaning about his sniffles. I HATE that so much! I've always hated it. But I digress. I just saw this as an opportunity to rant and get all of that out of my system. :)

^We call it man flu here, it's based on the belief that when a man has a small cold he say's he's got flu while a woman with flu would say she just has a cold. It's rubbish on both sides, and full of equally stupid (possibly dangerous) stereotypes. My Dad is ill about one day per ten years. What I dislike about the use of the term 'man flu' is it's used to suggest that someone isn't really ill, they're exaggerating, so it's doubting someone else's judgement of their own feelings.

On the bus today, someone that looked like a cisgender female, about 20 years old, said on the phone "a guy was screaming like a girl".

that. sounded. sexist. "guy"? "girl"? how about boy/girl, man/woman. "guy"? there is no female equivalent. "gal"? not the same thing.

but is it still sexist if someone that looks like a cisgender female, said it?

and what is this "screaming like a girl"? what does "a girl" scream like? and what does "a guy" scream like?

all "girls" scream differently. all "guys" scream differently.

totally sexist.

i hate the word "guy". "guy" sounds so cool. like junior high school males get called "guys", but females are "girls" until they are what, 50 years old?

sexist

makes me wanna puke

I grew up as a tomboy and I loved it put it pissed me off when a boy said that he wasn't supposed to hit a girl because it meant that he was put into a cage just because I'm a girl, what do you think about the rule yourself (I know that it's just being a ' gentle_man ' but why?

"You hit like a girl" sounds so old-fashioned. I thought it had passed out of use.

In the olden days, girls were taught to throw underhand, from the elbow. How boys hit was a big secret. Same with kicking - girls were taught to do a jazz-kick with the tip of the toe.

Now I am so encouraged to see beautiful young girls capable of looking after themselves. Even more, I am overjoyed by that picture of the Captain of the Women's Olympic Hockey Team breast-feeding between periods of the game.

It's insulting, but not really sexist. If you told a woman she hits like a man, you'd be recognizing her greater-than-expected strength, because men are on average stronger than women. So in telling a man he hits like a girl, you're calling his strength below expectation.

It's no more sexist than when a woman insults another woman by saying she has "man-hands" or "man-shoulders".

It could also mean the differences between the ways that boys and girls punch.

From personal observation (e.g., being on the receiving end), it would seem obvious that boys punch from the shoulder -- a straight-on punch -- while girls seem to swing their punches as if trying to slap with a closed fist.

Thus, a "roundhouse" punch may seem "girlish" to some, even when the results are the same (i.e., black eye, bloody nose, cut lip, et cetera).

People sometimes tell me that I “throw like a girl” when they see me throw a ball (like at a dog park). I haven’t played any sports (or wanted to) or had a gym class since elementary school so that’s why I’m so bad at it. I’ve never had any practice.

It’s annoying that they turn it into a gender thing, so I usually don’t throw balls when other people are around. It’s embarrassing.

Anyone who has a contagious disease should stay home from school or work to avoid spreading it around. This isn't always so cut and dried, however. If I stay in bed doing nothing, I actually feel worse than if I do my normal duties.

Very true, but a bit off topic. Wrong thread post?

Nowadays we generally discourage children from hitting under any circumstances (except as a way to deal with some sort of immediate threat such as being sexually assaulted). In my day, it was considered OK for a boy to challenge another boy to a fist fight to "settle a score" so long as it could be considered a "fair fight". In fact, fathers were expected to encourage their sons to do so under the proper circumstances. This way of thinking was even depicted in some popular TV shows. Of course there's still boxing, which is considered a legitimate sport, and both men and women can be good at it.

Yes it is sexist. It's is also a gender stereotype too.

so, sexism is inherent in the language.

I feel like this is true in a way. I don't know if it's an issue, I just kinda shrug my shoulders. Can't be helped, probably.

I don't like the phrase, wouldn't use it.

Women are generally physically weaker, yep anyone who wants to deny that is experiencing delusions. Unless you're a spider.

Us women could of been born spiders, one of many species where the sexual dimorphism could of made us physically bigger, (maybe even eat our husband if we please) but none of that matters. It is what it is and if one were to want to gain muscle mass or learn kung fu then they can do so. At least we aren't THAT guy. (the dot that is a male spider.)

(Male angler fish are basically just testies that attach themselves to a female XD)
