This wasn't a hit (#82 in the UK) but should have been imo:

Love it! Good blend of male and female voices. Happy, but with sad undertones. Shouda been a hit.

It competed with two other songs from the same era, with similar themes, but both were more overtly dark.

One was also British, the other song was American.

On the same station a crazed preacher runs an ad that Rock and Roll is the true highway to hell and leads everyone to Satan.

It's strange how certain music can sound better four decades later.

Yeah I am 39 and starting to get older.

"In my day, we didn't ______" is probably a phrase I will start saying soon.

The 1980s definitely a happy decade for me personally, and the 1990s started a rain of crap on my life. My mother died in 1990 when I was 7 and the 1990s were this depressing slog. The 1990s Nirvana "I want to kill myself" music appealed to me at that time.

But I am happier now and what surprises me is Nirvana sounds completely different to me now. They used to be my favorite band when I was like 15. Now I am finding myself liking Depeche Mode over Nirvana, if I had to choose which songs to take with me on an interstellar flight.
