Yes, I hold my pencil the "wrong" way.
I've been doing so apparently ever since I knew what a pencil was for.
My mother and all of my early Elementary School teachers tried to correct it; with reprimands, praise, modelling, pencil grips and other modifying devices... none of it worked. And it wasn't because I was being stubborn, or didn't realize that all the other kids held their pencils another way. It just felt WRONG to write the way that the teachers kept showing me. Like it just wouldn't work. So I kept doing it the way I always have. Still do. And life turned out just fine. Fancy that.

... Ehh... how is "the wrong way"? Upside down? I use four fingers when I hold a pencil.

Uh it's hard to explain the "wrong way" I know my finger is sore from the pencil pressing against that finger and I write hard not loose. :-)

I was having real problems with holding pens. Pencil grips helped a bit, but my grip is just too strained. It is not something I can control properly, unless I concentrate really hard. It is a real difficult thing.

Nowadays I type a lot, and I even use it for personal letters when I get the chance...

Yes. I've always been told I held a pencil 'wrong', but nobody seemed to be able to explain why. And like you, Acacia, I simply couldn't do it any other way because it didn't feel right.

I was also told by my HE teacher that I sewed 'the wrong way round'. I don't know what that was about either.

Oh, yeah, I do. It's bad enough that I'm left-handed, but I'm double jointed in the tip of my forefinger on that hand, so I end up pressing really hard to keep the pencil in place. I empathize, zelda, cuz I love marathon bouts of Sudoku, as well.

Because of a couple problems with my hands I don't do much handwriting any more and have lost the coordination to do cursive - cursive mostly comes out with lots of cursing now.
I'll scribble short notes for projects I'm making and that's about it.

Probably a fairly typical pencil hold done left handed.

Buy a pencil with a high lead content that is sold in art supply or university/college stores for sketching. That’s what I bought my wife who does accounting.

I like your handwriting - perhaps that subject deserves its' own thread, where we can compare and contrast our different writing styles. I often change inclination, size, and other aspects depending on the topic I am writing about and my mood at the time. And I write HARD, breaking most pencils quickly. I like good, fluid pens now as a result.

I write hard, but hold my pencil the "correct" way. I was desperate to learn to write as a child (I had so many stories in my head and wanted to write them down) so my mother taught me. I was able to see how she held the pencil and copied it.

This reminds me of a Aspie story from first grade! A friend wanted to get me a birthday present, and asked if I wanted a pencil grip. Since I already held my pencil the "right" way, but wanting to be nice, I said, "Oh, sure! I mean, I wouldn't use it, but it would be a nice present." The other girl burst into tears and I could not for the life of me figure out what I'd said wrong. I still kind of think she overreacted, but I didn't need to tell her I wouldn't use her gift.

as a child, I held pencils incorrectly, school helped me correct it but my handwriting never improved, it's still scruffy but it is readable

I have the opposite problem of pressing my pencil/pen too lightly. When using a pen, the ink always build up at the tip of my pen and makes my writing blotty.

I think we should start a topic where everyone must hand write replies to posts. No typed WP posts allowed :P.

My teachers and parents were/are always so frusterated with the way I hold my pencil and my handwriting. They say its to small for them to read. Its actually not bad handwriting...just small I guess. It looks normal to me, bout the size of the print in a book (maybe slightly smaller).

Apparently, since I loved to draw and write and did so at an extremely early age I messed up my ring fingers. The last joint doesnt work at all (it might as well be solid bone) and it bends in ward. Because of the way I hold my pencil. XD :D I think its kinda funny. Though i wonder how true it is.
