My mother did this the other day. It grossed me out.

Is doing this a confirmation of my belief that she is crazy and weird?

Ugh! :x

Tables in public places can be dirty.

I guess it depends on how clean the place looks. There are some restaurants I where I wouldn't even want to eat off the plates!

Technically yes, but acquiring germs like this can actually strengthen your immune system. That's why people who do stuff like this are often less sickly than people who try to create a sterile bubble around themselves.

It depends on how well the table was cleaned.

If it was cleaned with antibacterial cleaner, I think it would be even cleaner than the dishes, since the dishes and the silverware are handled directly by the server and the table would often not be touched after it's wiped.

It depends on the restaurant, as well as how clean it is. If it's a fancy upscale restaurant, probably not a good idea, but then again, not to may fancy upscale restaurants serve french fries, either. If the place is a nasty, and the table is dirty, it's not a good thing to do either for health reasons. --Other than that, it's probably not a horrible thing to do, provided that the french fry came from your own plate.

I agree with this, and it seems to work for me as long as the lack of sanitation is not taken to an extreme.

If I was starving and had access to a french fry, I might eat it.

Yes, it isn't a good idea to snatch French fries off the table next to you - it can lead to all manner of upset with the people at that table.

I agree that it could be an immune boosting thing as long as no raw meat was laid on the table, which I doubt. But there is also the 2 second rule which is if a food falls on a possible contaminated surface and stays there for less than two seconds...there was not enough time for the food to be contaimnated...at least that is the theory. I would love to see that theory to test under a microscope.

after working at a fast food pace and seeing how awesome (and by that I mean not so much) we cleaned tables, yes it's gross. But I am also one of those people who will lick elevator buttons for a dollar so that might not mean too much.

I'll admit that I've done this a few times...don't judge me!

But the fry was only on the table for a second, so I never really saw the harm in it.

If one were a McDonald's employee, then they need all the nutrition they can get. :P

It does depend on whether the table is clean or not, and also, if it is not clean, then whether or not ones own family were the ones to dirty it.
If the table is clean and you drop a fry on it, then it is still clean. If the table is not clean, yet is was clean prior to when your family sat down, then the table is only dirty with the same germs as you all had before. If the table was dirty when you got there, go ask an employee to clean your table, besides they probably want a break from being behind the counter anyway.

Hell, even reading the title made a vile bubble of pure foulness rise in my throat.

I refuse to type anymore lest I expire with disgust before I finish my post.

 So you would be unlikely to eat such a French fry then?
