I can touchtype quite well. Not bad for someone who could only use one finger to type in Year 7.

Yep. Legacy of a misspent youth. Funny thing is, I never noticed when I went from one-finger to two-finger to both hands to both hands without looking... it just kinda happened.

Not touchtyping is a huge annoyance of mine.

I don't understand how there is any excuse for it especially if you regularly use a computer. Even when being the best typer in classes, when given a blank keyboard I can't fill in the keys unless I put my hands on it and pretend to type things and gradually fill it in that way. I never look at my keyboard or have to think about typing at all. It just happens.

Yes, I can. I've been doing it since the sixties, on typewriters.

I don't understand how some people can be satisfied to do it the hunt-and-peck way.

I use a variation of touch typing, I use two fingers and my thumb to type, I don't hunt and peck, but I don't have my fingers resting on F and J either. I'm a very fast typer though.

Yes. And I'm proud to say quite well. Using a laptop or a computer is mainly the only way for me to communicate without getting to anxious or stressed out.

I rely on it. So I use it a lot and have learned how to type quickly without even having to look at the keyboard. It's very useful. I suggest that if you do have an ASD you should learn how to touch type. It makes communicating so much easier.

Never! Touchtyping is bullsh!t, IMO.

I use my left middle finger, right pointer finger, and right middle finger to type - and I can type over 90 WPM! I hate touchtyping with a passion.

I find that I have a very hard time touch typing. I tend to drum my keys with my fingers.

I grew up before computers in schools so I type with two fingers.

I know I should bite the bullet and go back to basics but instead I have just bought a copy of "Dragon Naturally Speaking" so that I can dictate my words into the computer.

Yes, I can touch-type using both qwerty and dvorak keyboard layouts.

I had significant difficulty learning how to type, because of poor coordination and because my fingers tend to get in the way of each other when trying to type with my fingers from the home row. My middle fingers are also significantly curved toward my ring fingers.

I can't use qwerty keyboards from the home row; I just memorized where each key was from looking at the keyboard so much and so can touch-type even though I can't type in the normal way.

When I learned how to use dvorak keyboards, I did so without repositioning the keys on a qwerty keyboard, so that I wouldn't know where the letters were on dvorak keyboards and so couldn't look at them. I can touch-type from the home row if using the dvorak keyboard layout.

The single most useful thing I learned in high school was touch typing (1 year of it). On typewriters.

Back then I could probably type somewhere around 60 or so words/minute because that's all we did for an hour/day, 5 days/week, for the whole school year. I could probably type around 30-40 words/minute now.

No, not acurately, I have trouble typing without error regardless if I touch type or not. It's a rather mangled form of touchtyping that I seem to use.

I taught myself touch typing many years ago. It was well worth the effort, words just flow straight from my mind to the screen without thinking about it. I don't know what my words per minute are, but very fast.

One thing I've noticed. The last two computers I bought had barely perceptible dimples on the F and J keys. Soon remedied though with a tiny speck of Araldite resin on each key - no mistaking the home positions now.

That is my story also. I took the typing class in my senior year of high school because I figured it would be handy once I was in college. The course was not for the academic track students. I was the only male in class of female students who were tracked to become secretaries and clerks (this was back in 1953) when they had such tracking in high school.

It served me well. I not only was able to prepare my work faster, I was able to pick up a few bucks by typing up papers for other students.
