I've noticed the following factors seem to have a big impact on whether a thread stays on page 1 of the Random Forum (or becomes sticky) and in no particular order (of 'merit') here's a few that stand out for me;

1. The thread (title) is creative and original - like - 'interview the person below you'

2. The thread (title) is an invitation for us to say something about ourselves - like - 'got anything random to say'

3. The thread is started by someone who is VERY popular among the membership
I always read the threads of my favorite WP members when I first log in, before looking through the remaining thread titles for 'interest' factor.

What other 'success' factors can you think of :?:

The workings of the title. The more catchy the title, the more replies it will get.

I can't speak for other aspies, but I know I love talking about myself, so I'll post in any kind of thread like the one you mentioned.

I think it's just something that's not a discussion. Discussions can only last so long before everyone's given an opinion and the conversation dies. "Post something random" is an open invitation to keep coming back and posting repeatedly anytime something random happens in your day.

I have discovered one thing about threads and that is.

People love to talk about what they enjoy and talk what others enjoy.

I tend to discuss what I love and put a frame to it, mainly on game discussion.

Like I ask people what is there favorite music from an old video game to what is their favorite food.

Voodoo.

Stuff that lets people spout infinitely about themselves.

Is this, in itself, an attempt to have a thread remaining on Page 1 of the Random Discussion forum?

I'd say each individual has their own schema. The representation of those who tend to go after the threads by the "popular" wpers I suspect is higher in the WP populace.

For me it's
1.threads that have topics that seem interesting to me.
2.Threads by interesting/prolific wpers
3.fledgling threads whose topic seems original to me.
4.threads with topics that have been done 10^8 times over in other forums or even other WP threads. Only to spit verbal acid at the op though.

I think that the less complicated things could stay on the first page forever. :)

Sorry, I'm ruining your post.

I think the best way to keep a thread on the first page is for it to be something which is continual. So, people can post differently over and over again.

Perhaps people bumping it all the time?

I remember a thread someone once inadvertently posted. But he did not know how to remove it so simply edited the title to read 'ignore this'

He should not have done that. It proved the most unignored thread in history with about 140 replies to date. All meaningless banter of course.

When the thread has some controversial content.

When replying to it doesn't demand giving long answers because the nature of the thread is that a one liner is sufficient - just some trivial thread.
