I was just talking to another menber form here at msn and for some odd reason we started talking about social network places.

I can get whats the point of having a facebook, it makes sharing photos with those you know easier and it gives you a way of getting to know another person without having to ask too many questions since most people love posting about their daily lifes.

But I cant get whats the thing about twitter, just as I couldnt understand facebook before I started using it so could any twitter user from here explain why everyone says its so great?

I have a twitter account but I occasionally use it.

It's a site where you post rl photos and short summaries of what's happening in your life, your moods, interests etc. Basicially it's a blog but without being verbose in writing.

Facebook is just a popular Myspace without the background music or individual page design. I generally use it to keep in touch with friends and family who are on there.

It's a popular trend. Not hard to grasp.

Twitter's popular amongst American media whores. They all post useless updates on that site and all the children across america who strive to know what their favorite TV actor is having for breakfast go on to check.

At least that's something close, I believe.

It's hard for me to explain why I'm addicted to Twitter. I just am, and have gotten a lot of entertainment out of it.

it's more than just finding out what people are having for breakfast, certainly.

Twitter is for people who don't know how to code HTML, don't know how to code PHP, and don't know how to get a free server/website space (and search for the HTML/PHP code to do these things!).

It looks exactly like reddit, slashdot, gawker, jalopnik, engadget, anandtech, google reader, etc.

I've always wondered about Twitter too. Then I went in and had a look around. I decided that I won't be needing an account on there because I have Face Book and that's quite enough for me.

Some of the responses to this thread have cleared some confusions for me too. :)

I created a Twitter account and followed some hockey insiders so I can keep up with NHL news and rumours. I've followed a bunch of geeky science accounts too, I always see them post interesting articles. So I'm actually liking Twitter. I usually don't like popular/mainstream websites either.

I'm on twitter and it's completely changed the way I work. (I'm @the_anke).

As with any network, you get out of it what you put in. It seems random to begin with - just like if you went into a place with millions of people talking to each other. But once you found a few people that are talking about something you're interested in, you follow them, then you don't hear anyone else. Friends of mine keep saying Facebook is for your friends, twitter is for people you'd like to be friends with.

The celeb media whore culture thing is only one part of it - obviously the easiest for the mainstream media to pick up. For me it's been people who think about things differently.

I've made some brilliant friends, it's affected the way I've dealt with my son's Aspie diagnosis (although WP gets more credit since it's helped us actually pin the diagnosis down for ourselves. So, thank you WP.) And it's helped me be more true to myself too.

Thank you all for the replies I think you explained what twitter is fairly accurately.

" Friends of mine keep saying Facebook is for your friends, twitter is for people you'd like to be friends with. " this sounds interesting so maybe Ill give it a go sometime soon.
