I used to listen to NPR in the mornings while I was still working.

edit: ... and I think they occasionally played some BBC stuff.

Any radio station in particular? I'm asuming you mean the world service not the 7 radio stations?

I listen to Radio 4 a lot more then I watch TV these days. It has far more interesting stuff on every day apart from the drama stuff and the Archer's and their sheep shagging stories

If you're interested in domestic UK affairs too, try BBC Radio 4 (i.e. what used to be called the Home Service). I stopped listening to it ever since they got rid of this piece…

…of music every morning, but there's still some good stuff to be found on it. I had to stop listening to the Today programme as it was making my blood boil!

As well as domestic UK news and current affairs the station also inclues programmes that cover comedy, gardening, law, banking, a soap opera, books et al.

The World Service isn't the same without Lillibullero being blasted out at :59 past the hour either. Meh. :?

Yes, I listen to BBC Radio 4 sometimes. I didn't generally used to like commercial radio, though Planet Rock is okay. Never really listened to Radio 1, though I did listen to Atlantic 252 back in the day. But 2001-2008 I listened just to Radio 4 and the World Service.

I used to listen (here in the US) to the BBC World Service on short wave too. Now National Public Radio broadcasts the World Service overnights. I now listen to that quite a bit, along with NPR. Years ago, shortwave used to be a special interest of mine, but now that the WWWeb has shrunk the planet (in a sense) it wouldn't have the same appeal to me. A lot of that content that used to be only available on the radio is now available as podcasts. I know the BBC has extensive podcasts, for example.

I like listening to BBC Radio sometimes. Even though I'm in the US, I can still listen to it on their website. I used to listen to Radio 7, but they appear to have changed it up since the last time I was there. Pity, I really liked it the way it was. :(

If you have a (helpful) friend in the UK, you can watch UK TV through a Slingbox. There are also online services that offer deals to non-UK viewers, though they're a bit dodgy.

I wouldn't bother though. There isn't really that much of interest on British TV these days, though some of the stuff on BBC Four can occasionally be interesting. Hasn't been like that for a while for me though.

I'm able to watch some British programmes through Netflix. That's how I discovered Doctor Who. :D

Doctor Who has a cult following in the US, that is true.

Then there's the likes of:

 • University Challenge
 • EastEnders (this actually used to be on BBC America for a while before it was pulled - it's still available to watch on the foreign-broadcasted BBC Entertainment)
 • Mastermind
 • Top Gear (this is watched worldwide I believe and is available on BBC World News)
 • Coronation Street (also available in Canada and New Zealand)
 • Emmerdale
 • Come Dine With Me
 • Benidorm (this used to be a personal favourite of mine, although it's become more and more ridiculous after Series 2)
… and so on.

I would definitely recommend Benidorm. It's basically about a bunch of working class people - mostly from Northern England - who holiday at the same resort in Benidorm, Spain every year. It's not pretty but it gives a much truer representation of British working-class holiday culture than many Americans would expect. If you go to places like Benidorm (and other, similar commercialised southern European holiday resorts) these are the sort of people you'd encounter. Which is why I don't go on holiday to places like that if I can possibly avoid it.

So if you want to find out exactly what it's like to holiday in an all-inclusive resort with a load of working-class (although a lot of them are often on 'bennyfits' these days), Benidorm is well worth a watch. It's vulgar but quite funny too.

This is five minutes of highlights from the first episode (the original episodes were only about 22 minutes long):

Thank you for the recommendations Tequila! I admit that I haven't heard of many of those before, but that's alright because I enjoy learning about new programmes (well, new to me anyway). I have heard of EastEnders though, because I have read in various interviews that that is a programme which my favorite actress, Helena Bonham Carter, enjoys watching.

I think I would enjoy Benidorm very much, because I enjoy vulgar humor. In fact, vulgar humor is probably the type of humor which makes me laugh the hardest. I was laughing so hard while going through the recent "toilet humor" thread that tears were in my eyes!

Some of the soap operas are so so personal I'm not into them, for political satire watch Have I got News For You
