Who is "Art"?  Why do you love him?  Why should anyone hate him?

I don't believe it's possible to hate inanimate objects. I think you can only really hate things with agency. So I guess someone who hated 'art' would really be hating people who have the ambition to create art?

Which would be weird because its just communication, isn't it? So it would be a sort of snobbery? Like, "Why can't you just say what you think instead of making a big look-at-me fuss about it?"

And I imagine it would come from a lack of self-esteem, a feeling that you weren't fully understanding what was being communicated and not really liking that feeling.

So yeah. I don't hate art and I don't know anyone who does. I like some of it and don't enjoy the rest like most people. But I can see how a person could hate art.

I'm afraid I find it exceptionally boring. It seems to comprise of pictures of dead people, landscapes, disproportionately sized animals and the modern version... a pile of rubbish.

Sorry, you lost me.

However, if art includes art deco vehicles some of them are very attractive if the proportions are right.

Everything is art - because everything was designed by nature or mankind. Even something simple like a chair or a pencil was designed creatively. That being said, of course there are unappealing chairs and spoons. lol

I love visual art and art history. I think it tells a story of how people view the world.

I met someone once who said they didn't like music. Period. No music at all of any genre! They said they absolutely hated all music. This was in the 1980s but I've never stopped thinking about it. I can't even imagine that. I thought it was rather natural for people to respond to at least SOME music.

The only thing I really hate about art is when some pretentious, narcissistic artiste feels the need to explain to me why crap on a canvas qualifies as art.

The term has been destroyed. I appreciate many things but when splat painting, Piss Christ and the works of paint-enema-man are considered art in supposedly serious circles I cannot honestly say "I like art".

My third-grade teacher told me to paint "something", so I drew a perfect circle on a blank sheet of paper, colored it in orange, called it "Solitude", and signed my name to it.

She praised me so profusely for my abstract expressionism that I could not help but laugh when I told her that it really was...

... the flag of Japan!
.

Don't you just like other art?

We all have styles we appreciate and others we don't.

Only by the modern definition, which I reject. The modern definition is pretty much "if someone wants to call it art, it is art". So everything can be art.

My own personal definition of art excludes (not exhaustively):

- Items or performances mainly designed to induce disgust or sexual arousal. Pornography is not art. Piss Christ is not art.
- Anything that requires no skill, talent or real effort beyond what an ordinary person could pull off.
- Anything a layman could not reasonably recognise as art without formal education in the topic. How many lay people could realistically distinguish between "masterpieces" of abstract expressionism and something an angry seven year old could create given the same materials?

So yeah, it's not the art that people hate. It's the artists, right? If they feel the work is merely being passed off as meaningful, if they feel the artist has nothing to say or hasn't mastered the medium they've chosen to work in.

Art to me is just a conveyance of meaning. So I don't really differentiate between an old master painting holy babies on a church ceiling and someone pickling half a baby cow. I look at those things and have a reaction - you can debate what the meaning is and whether it has merit or not but both fulfil the function of art in my opinion.

I don't hate art in any way.
Some artworks don't appeal to me. And that's okay.
Art is an expression, some of it works for me and some of it doesn't.

It is both: Pretentious artistes who criticize others for not appreciating their "crap on a canvas".

When any zoo can sell a painting that was produced by one of their animals smearing paint on a canvas, and that painting sells for more than what any artiste can produce, you should know that what passes for art these days is really pathetic.

Maybe that person had an auditory disability. I have one and I have some strong likes and dislikes when it comes to sounds, so I can imagine someone with a similar condition hating music.
