A coworker told us that the expression "turning Japanese" was slang for male masturbation...because guys tend to squint their eyes while they stroke it. Just sayin'.

I wonder if that's what the song means.

According to songwriter David Fenton, "Turning Japanese is all the clichés about angst and youth and turning into something you didn't expect." Fenton intended the song to be a love song, with the character of the song "pining over a photograph of his ex-girlfriend" in his bedroom, drawing from Fenton's own experience of being rejected. Fenton wrote the song in his flat, but had problems writing the chorus. He said that the chorus then came to him suddenly when he woke up at 4am with the line "Turning Japanese, I think I'm turning Japanese" in his head, and he used it even though the words and the song title did not "really mean much".

If you played the song now, you'd be called a horrible racist because of cultural appropriation.

Apparently it's very wrong and racist for me to *like* something that isn't from my own culture now. Guess I'd better stop eating noodles and steamed dumplings.

What is this, a song about becoming a Weeaboo?

When I was in highschool the song was the anthem for racists who would pull "asian eyes" on their eyelids and laugh. It was all over the radio. then at some point it stopped playing and (like Michael Jackson songs) you couldn't play it on radio. But like MJ, people forget and today I do hear it on retro radio and yes, the Weeabo culture people really want to be Japanese (or Korean if they are K-pop diehards).
