I want an iPod. I notice there are a bunch of much-cheaper knock-offs. Now, I'm not interested in podcasting or video, I just want sraight up music so I can shop without losing my sanity (my own noise versus theirs) and have something to listen to while exercising. Should I go with Apple or are the others just as good?

I like my iPod. I own all of my music, so it works great. I have friends who have other brands, and they like the features you get with them. The iRiver can drag and drop music, as opposed to syncing each time you plug it into your computer. It would be nice if the iPod did that. To me, it was more about capacity. The iPods come with bigger hard drives, and I have a lot of music.

I'm not sure what the name of my mp3 player is, cause its got 3 brand names on it. Sansa, Sandisk, and Rhapsody. I've used ipods, I didn't like them as much as mine. Mine plays videos and holds pictures and songs and has a radio and a recorder. Its only 2 gigs though, if it was more than I would have like a ton of pics and videos on there. I only have one video, Mushroomhead's video for 1200, and 3 pictures of drawing that I made, and like over 280 songs.
The ipod ain't anything new, and neither is the iphone for that matter, but the brand names and the hype give them an excuse to overprice them.

I think you answered you're question. Yes, go with iPod. There's a reason why there are so many knockoffs... the original is always the best.

i'm not implying that the ipod is original. i am implying that it is the source where all copycat mp3 players originate.

A lot of mp3 players have been around since before the ipod.
I don't know if mine was or wasn't, but I've used an Ipod and I like my mp3 player a lot more.

Well, without dragging this down into something she didn't ask for...

As basic music players... all the major brand mp3 players are fine.

You'll see arguments about which features are best, ergonomics, price, battery type/life, etc.

You should look at the:
Price
Storage type and capacity
Compatibility with your computer/music program
Physical dimensions and controls

I really like my iPod Nano... except for one thing... I bought a 1Gb. It's not that major of an issue since I usually only listen to one song over-and-over-and-over, or a playlist again-and-again-and-again :P
But I have been considering a new one with larger storage capacity.

I may look at the Cowon instead of the iPod. I don't want to play videos, but I like the other features and I know someone who has one, so I've gotten a close look at it.

One of the things I like about the non-Apple mp3 players is the ability to accept a memory card like an SD.
This way, you could load all sorts of different things on different cards.

What I really like about the Nano is the size and controls.
I hardly notice I have the thing with me.
I have had mine for almost two years now.
I'm happy with it and it cost me around $149 new. Today, I could have four times the capacity for the same price.
Here's a link about the new Nano

Yog mentioned some other popular brands like Sansa, and Sandisk.
You might take a look at reviews here

I do hope anyone who wants to bicker over their favorites can do so elsewhere :D

I really like my iPod. One thing is that there are alot of complimentary devices made specifically for the iPod, while alot of other ones that aren't as big might not have like docks made for it so that you can listen to it in your car or other things that might be convenient. Just don't get one too big. Like there is a new one coming out that has 160GB and I just thing I don't even have that much space on my hardrive let alone accumilate enough music, movies, photos, or data, to fill that thing half way. I got an 80 GB and I haven't even come close to filling it half way. Plus the iPods in the smaller sizes are getting cheaper so now is the time to get like a 60GB or a 30GB which are more reasonable.

I've had an iPod for about a year so here are the good and the bad bits:

GOOD
The best user interface going, clear and simple.
Good sound, especially if you use decent headphones
Works with Linux using GTKPod
Great battery life

BAD
The earphone socket is a bit fragile, I'm on my third.
The shiny finish attracts fingerprints and can be slippery if you have wet hands at the gym.

Your call.

One thing that irks me about this though, is when Apple makes those slight physical changes that keep one generation of Nano from working on older devices.

Example...

I have an older Nano (square edges, the old black one), my daughter has a newer one (round edges and in green).

The headphone port is in slightly different places in each one.
There are devices we each use that will accommodate our own nanos but not the other person's, because the built-in plug doesn't match up with certain generations.

My Macally headphones accept my older nano, but not her newer one.
I got her a little round, portable speaker for her nano, only to realize the headphone port on her nano was slightly off to one side of the plug built into the speaker(which I then realized was made for the older nanos).
Luckily I like to take things apart and was able to re-position the plug so her nano would work.

Other than THAT little marketing strategy  ... I really prefer the iPods over most other mp3 players.

I don't know if this same thing happens with the larger iPods.

Look at my Avatar. The Samsung Yp-T9 is a very good MP3 player. You can use more music stores, audio files, and it has FM radio, FM recording, voice recording, flash games, a 30 hour battery life, and if your cell phone is made by LG, you can use the charger with the T9.

I have owned that for a little over a year and have had no problems with it. It comes in 2 and 4 gig capacities, but the 8 gig model is available in Korea.

RaceDrv709,

You reminded me of the issues surrounding AIFF!

There is a certain amount of computer gymnastics you have to go through to unlock the iTunes songs, even from your iPod, so you can move music across any medium you want.
I downloaded a few programs to do that.

But, whether it's AIFF, or WAV, I still like to convert my music to mp3 for the freedom issue.

Just so you know Siuan, if you have a tune on your iPod, you aren't supposed to be able to drag it off the iPod and onto your computer... or someone else's.
There is a way, by going into terminal on a mac and changing a small bit of line.

Hang on! If you look at the Ipod video I posted the last song played was K.T. Tunstall 'Hold On'(I really like that song!) and then underneath... the Starbucks logo!
