Europe,although in Uk and Ireland we actually think of it as being more a political
description than geographical,because we're on islands.We refer to mainland Europe as being 'The Continent' and use the description 'Continental' to refer to non-British/Irish places or concepts,especially the Latin ones.

Thanks for pointing that out, I'd heard those expressions in books by Agatha Christie but it didn't connect. In America we somehow think of Hawaii and Alaska as being part of the US (except for when it comes to mailing, then it costs more to ship out of "the continental United States") I wonder if a similar thought-relationship occurs for people living in New Zealand, Madagascar, Japan, Iceland, etc.
