I spent an hour and a half researching earwigs at the library earlier today.

Today I have been watching various movie hacking scenes and laughing at how inaccurate they are.

My favorite line I have come across so far is "Isolate the node and dump it on the other side of the router" to which someone replies "I can't, it's moving too fast". This is funny because in networking a "node" refers to a computer connected to the network, so what they are really saying assuming that they are using the jargon correctly is that they are trying to unplug the computer and throw it out the window but they can't because it's moving too fast and they can't catch it. They also mention "They burned through our firewall" which makes no sense at all. You don't "burn" firewalls, you go around them.

Another great scene shows a UI with 6 firewalls that are being "decrypted". Encryption technology is not used at all in firewalls, all firewalls do is block packets that do not meet predetermined requirements. The UI shows that the computer knows it's being hacked but if it did then it could just deny that entity access, the whole point of hacking is to make the computer think you are authorized and if it knows it's being hacked then the hacker has already failed. Also, 6 firewalls? At most there are 2 firewalls on any one system (a network wide hardware firewall and a single system software firewall) and that is considered excessive because adding more firewalls does nothing to increase security while making it even harder to allow programs to access the internet. Also, their concern was that the hacker would access sensitive data and they could have just unplugged the server from the network to do that.

Seriously though, surely the people who make these movies have an IT guy around to ask about this sort of stuff. Who else would make sure sensitive information like their employee payroll doesn't get hacked?

So yeah, this is why I will be trying to portray hacking as accurately as possible in my own fictional universe.

This is pbl187. I was quite rightly permanently banned on that account. I probably will be banned on this cos I shouldn't be here (I'm not going to act up again), but I am deeply sorry for the way I acted and the stuff I wrote.

Do you and babybird think I should be allowed a second chance or should be unwelcome on this site forever? If it's the latter then I will request to be banned and never return. Please bear in mind though that I do have serious problems, and I intend to get help for them. There will be no more PM's from me, the last few haven't been vitriolic or hateful, but all the same, no more, I swear

Believe it or not, I'm not just looking for attention and trying to provoke a reply, I mean every word of this. If you knew me better, you would know I'm not as bad as I must seem right now, and whatever anyone has thought of me over my behaviour, I guarantee you that I've thought worse, and not just for this but in my past too.

Sorry for length, if I'm allowed to stay I'm gonna address that. I just want this to be the last anyone hears about it once and for all

Oh yeah, I haven't forgotten what website I'm on. I know I'm not the only one here who has an ASD and demons. I just wanna make things right, even if it means I have to just shut the hell up and go away

Trey Parker took the role of Balthazar Bratt because he wanted his daughter to be able to watch something he was in. And we're all thankful for that.
