Strange but true. In medieval times the groom of the stool was the name of the job of the person whose responsibility it was to wipe the king's bottom.

Sounds quite intuitive. They groom (verb) His Royal Majesty's stool (either the chair for the activity, or euphemistically, what is left when the Royal Prerogative has been completed). He's also a groom in the noun sense (someone who looks after).

Actually, my fantasy novel project has a character (and title) Laird Stalgrum.

That's a cool name.

It's an 'honourable' name, I'm not sure if I'd like to have another word for poop in my name.
