What does 'high-functioning refer to?

I think different things qualify as high-functioning. It's whatever you set your bar as. For me, I wanted college and stuff...that is my high-functioning...but that doesn't mean I don't struggle still.

What does 'high-functioning refer to? Real life? Articulateness? Terminology? Quick comebacks? friendliness?
Sometimes I talk a lot on WP because it is difficult to carry on a conversation with other people in real life.
Some others here have said similar things about themselves. So, is 'high-functioning' a WP thing, or a IRL thing?

Sylkat

I don't know what it is or what it really means, nobody has actually explained it to me. I would be interested to hear other peoples thoughts on it though. Thank you for raising it Sylkat!

Hi guys.

I like most of the members on this thread and I count as unpopular, so I'm officially joining. :)

TenPencePiece, I like your cone appreciation thread, I have a cone that lives right outside my front door.

You consider yourself unpopular, Kjas? I really didn't know that, since I see you post quite a bit in L&D :?

To me a high functioning form of autism would be someone that has the same issues as others with autism, but perhaps not as severe and are able to recognize their issues and manage them better. I've met some with autism that can openly talk to others and lead a relatively normal life, then other's who find it difficult just leaving the house. I don't consider myself high functioning due to some regular issues I have, but it doesn't make me think any less of myself.
