hope may ultimately be "useless" in a material sense, but psychologically it is the last bit of flotsam one can glom onto in desperation and in that respect has a utility, albeit modest.

"I'll pray for you" is particularly damaging, both physically and psychologically, because not getting better reflects poorly on God as well so there is more guilt attached.

They did studies on it.

often, people will offer such bromides in the absence of anything useful to say, rather like grasping at straws. i would not attach anything of more import to it other than the possibility that they feel bad for one but are powerless.
