Do they ever not pop up? Perhaps you only notice them when you come back. It's hard to notice the threads that get created when you're not here.

Since we got a young, energetic cat who loves to shred paper, we’ve been keeping the bathroom doors shut even when not in use to keep him from shredding the toilet paper. What the rest of my family does not seem to have realized is that that also means the bathrooms don’t really air out any more, so they need to actually make use of the bathroom fans. :eew:
