My mother often talked about how materialistic they were. Lately, Uncle Moshe had been spending a lot, perhaps because he doesn't believe he will live that long what with his diabetes and how he loves to eat junk food anyway (and then he goes and injects, then eats some more and injects some more). Dolores and Moshe's doctor says that it's like a double tragedy, as both have so much wrong with them. Dolores kvetches a lot about her health, which my mother also does about her health. Dolores also says that Hershel kvetches to his friends about his health. He bought an expensive widescreen TV, an expensive media centre (basically a shelving unit), expensive paintings, expensive plant pots, and two new leather couches (I don't know if they're real leather). They got the apartment repainted again. They own a laptop and three desktop computers. They have a van but they still have bus passes. They paid over $1000 to a photographer to take professional family photos once, as well as photos of at least one of their daughters' bat mitzvahs. They have professionally-made videos showing pictures of their daughters' lives and their bat mitzvahs taped on the same video. Even though Joey didn't want a bar mitzvah and said he wasn't religious, they still considered it, complete with a $25 bouquet of flowers for each table. All five of them have cellphones, and they have a landline. They take trips to New York to visit family and Isa splurges on shoes there. Dolores also caves to her demands for expensive t-shirts with her favorite bands depicted or mentioned on them, expensive CDs, concert tickets, etc.
